How to Install Android Q Beta on Pixel Smartphones (Official)

Android Q first beta is now available for Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel 2 XL, Google Pixel 3, and Google Pixel 3 XL. If you want to test the first preview of Android Q on your Pixel smartphone then this guide is for you. Here you will know how to install Android Q beta on Pixel Series smartphones with two different methods.

Download Android Q Beta

Android Q has started the beta testing and soon it will be available as a developers preview for another Android smartphones too. But this first build is only available for Pixel series including the first gen pixel smartphones. This build is very similar to Android Pie with some Android Q features like privacy, system-wide dark mode, expanded desk mode, extra notification options etc. There is a high probability that in the next build we will get more Android Q features that are missing in this first build. Also, thanks to XDA developers for providing Android Q OTA files so that Pixel users can directly update their phones by the sideloading OTA method.

How to Install Android Q Beta on Pixel Phones

You can enroll for Android 10 Q Beta and get the OTA update directly on the phone. Also, you can use the OTA update files to install Android Q manually on your phone. I will cover both the methods.

Enroll and Install Android Q Beta (Official Method)

  1. First Visit Google Android Beta program page.
  2. Make sure that you are sign-in with the same account that you are using on your pixel phone.
  3. Now Click on “View your Eligible Devices”.
  4. It will take you to the list of supported phones.
  5. Now under the device on which you want to get this Android Q beta, click on Opt In.
  6. It will ask for agreement so check “I agree” and click Join Now.
  7. Open Settings on your phone.
  8. Go to System > Advanced > System Updates.
  9. Click on “check for updates” and wait.
  10. Now it will give Android Q Beta update for your phone, so click on “Download & Install”.
  11. After reboot Android Q Beta will be installed on your phone.

Install Android Q Beta using OTA File (Non-Rooted Pixel phones)

Steps to Install Android Q

  1. Download the OTA file for your phone.
  2. Download and Install ADB & Fastboot drivers on PC.
  3. Place the OTA file where you have installed ADB driver (C:\adb is the default location).
  4. Connect your phone to PC using USB.
  5. Now Press Shift + Right Click (in C:\adb) and click on “Open PowerShell window here” or “Open Command window here” and terminal in case of Mac.
  6. Now enter the following command to boot into Recovery mode:
    • Windows PowerShell: .\adb reboot recovery
    • Windows Command prompt: adb reboot recovery
    • Mac/Linux Terminal window: ./adb reboot recovery
  7. The phone will enter in recovery mode and now use the Vol up/down button to reach “Apply update from ADB” and press power button to select it.
  8. You can now install Android Q Beta using the following command:
    • Windows PowerShell: .\adb sideload name_of_ota_file.zip
    • Windows Command prompt: adb sideload name_of_ota_file.zip
    • Mac/Linux Terminal window: ./adb sideload name_of_ota_file.zip
    • Remember enter the actual name of the download ota in place of name_of_ota_file.
  9. It will install Android Q Beta on your pixel device and now in the phone, select “Reboot System Now”.
  10. Now you can enjoy Android Q on your phone with new goodies.

Install Android Q Beta using Factory Image (Rooted Pixel phones)

Steps to Install Android Q

  1. Download Factory Image for your phone from the above link.
  2. Download Platform Tools and extract it.
  3. Extract the Factory image file inside Platform tools folder. Make sure the files of Factory image are inside Platform tools folder.
  4. Windows User – Open flash-all.bat file in notepad and remove -w from the last fastboot update line and save the file. (You can skip this step if you don’t care to loose phone data and storage).
  5. Mac User – Open flash-all.sh file in notepad and remove -w from the last fastboot update line and save it.
  6. Now connect your phone to PC using USB.
  7. In Platform Tools, Press Shift + Right click and click on “Open PowerShell window here” or “Open Command window here” and terminal in case of Mac.
  8. Now enter the following command to boot into Recovery mode:
    • Windows PowerShell: .\adb reboot bootloader
    • Windows Command prompt: adb reboot bootloader
    • Mac/Linux Terminal window: ./adb reboot bootloader
  9. Once you are in bootloader mode, Run flash-all.bat file if you are using Windows OS and Run flash-all.sh file if you are using MacOS.
  10. It will now install Android Q Beta developers preview on Pixel device. And if the device does not automatically restart then do it manually and enjoy Android Q on your phone.
