Samsung Note 9 is the flagship (powered with Snapdragon 845 SoC) Smartphone which was released last year. Here we will provide a guide to Root Samsung Note 9 Exynos/Snapdragon variants. This method will work for Samsung SM-N960F, SM-N960F/DS, SM-N960X, SM-N960N, SM-N9600 (Snapdragon).
Just like other Samsung flagship smartphones it also comes in two different chipset variants. One with Exynos Chipset and another with Snapdragon chipset. And rooting Exynos powered Note 9 is easier because the bootloader can be unlocked easily. But in Snapdragon poweredย Note 9 only the SM-N9600 can be rooted as it comes as an unlocked bootloader by default. The other Snapdragonย model SM-N960U is not possible to root.

If your device model matches with the above list then you can root your Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Below we have divided the guide into two different sections as for Exynos and Snapdragon.

- Take a full backup of your device (It will erase all your data)
- Download Samsung USB Drivers and Install on PC
- Download Latest Odin Flash Tool
- Download TWRP Recovery
- Download Root File

How to Root Samsung Note 9 Exynos
If you have the Samsung Note 9 powered with Exynos then you have to follow this section to root your phone. First Install TWRP Recovery and then flash a zip file to root Samsung Note 9 Exynos.
Install TWRP Recovery on Samsung Note 9 Exynos
- Open Settings on Samsung Note 9.
- Go to About phone > Software Information and click continuously on build number until it says now ‘you are a developer’.
- Go back to Settings and open Developer Options. Turn on OEM Unlock (wait for 7-days if the option not available). The first time it will ask to do a factory reset so click ok to format the phone. Also, check the OEM unlock after formatting.
- After formatting sign-in on the device and carry on with the procedure.
- Turn off your phone completely.
- Boot into download mode (Press and hold Vol down + Bixby & connect the USB cable). It will give a warning screen.
- Now press Vol Up button and it will go in downloading mode.
- Extract the Odin zip file and run Odin Tool (Odin3.exe) on PC.
- It will show a blue color in ID:COMย section. If not showing then your device is not connected properly. In this case, Install the Samsung Drivers.
- In Odin Tool, click on AP and choose the TWRP image (twrp-3.2.3-0-crownlte_UNOFFICIAL.tar.md5) that you downloaded earlier.
- Hold down Volume Up and click on start, and immediatelyย hold Bixby button also. and when the screen goes off immediatelyย hold Power button also until it boots into TWRP recovery. Remember not to release any button until it boots into recovery.
- In TWRP recovery, select “Keep Rad Only”. Go to Wipe > Format Data & type ‘yes’ and click ok.
- Click on the Home icon and go to Reboot > Recovery.
- Again connect the phone with pc and copy the root file in phone memory. If you are unable to copy, make sure to copy the file in a flash drive and connect it to the phone via OTG.
- Now you are ready to Root Samsung Note 9. Do not reboot into the system.
Root Samsung Note 9 Exynos
- In TWRP recovery go to Install and select the copied Root File (N9_S9_Root_for_OEM_issue_devices_V.zip).
- Swipe the slider to start flashing the file.
- Click on Next > Agree & Next > Next. Choose “Proceed with ROM flasher and Multitool” and then select “Patch for OEM issue” & click Next.
- Choose “Root with Magisk” and click Next > Run Now.
- Now click on Next and Checkย “Reboot your device now” and click on Finish.
- In TWRP recovery click on Reboot and select ‘Do not Install’.
- This will boot your device into System. And now you have Rooted Samsung Note 9 Exynos Model.
- Download Magisk Manager if it not already installed.
So now you have the rooted phone and also you can try various custom ROMs. But remember you will not receive Official OTA updates after unlocking the bootloader.
How to Root Samsung Note 9 Snapdragon (SM-N9600)
This section is for you if you have a Samsung Note 9 Snapdragon SM-N9600. So follow the steps given below to Root Samsung Note 9 Snapdragon Model. This will not support SM-N960U Models.
Install TWRP Recovery on Samsung Note 9 Snapdragon
- Open Settings on Samsung Note 9.
- Go to About phone > Software Information and click continuously on build number until it says now ‘you are a developer’.
- Go back to Settings and open Developer Options. Turn on OEM Unlock (wait for 7-days if the option not available). The first time it will ask to do a factory reset so click ok to format the phone. Also, check the OEM unlock after formatting.
- After formatting sign-in on the device and carry on with the procedure.
- Turn off your phone completely.
- Boot into download mode (Press and hold Vol down + Bixby & connect the USB cable). It will give a warning screen.
- Now press Vol Up button and it will go in downloading mode.
- Extract the Odin zip file and run Odin Tool (Odin3.exe) on PC.

- In Odin Tool, click on AP and choose the TWRP image (TWRP_3.2.3-0_N9600_beta3.tar.md5) that you downloaded earlier.
- Uncheck Auto Reboot under options.
- Click on Start and wait for the success message.
- Reboot into TWRP recovery (Press & hold Vol Up + Bixby + Power button).
- In TWRP recovery, select “Keep Rad Only”. Go to Wipe > Format Data & type ‘yes’ and click ok.
- Download Custom Kernelย & Magisk.zip on PC.
- Again connect the phone with pc and copy both zip files in phone memory. If you are unable to copy, make sure to copy the file in a flash drive and connect it to the phone via OTG.
- Now you are ready to Root Samsung Note 9. Do not reboot into the system.
Root Samsung Note 9 Snapdragon
- In TWRP recovery go to Install and select the custom kernel (boot.img).
- Swipe the slider to flash the custom kernel.
- Click on the Home icon and again go to Install and this time select the Magisk.zip.
- Swipe the slider to flash Magisk. And with this, you have rooted your phone.
- Go to Reboot > System.
- Setup the device and Download Magisk Manager if it not already installed.
Now you have the rooted Samsung Note 9 Snapdragon SM-N9600. You can now use apps which needs root permission.
