How to Stop Multiple Chrome Processes – Google Chrome is undoubtedly the most used browser for computers. It comes with loads of features that make it a unique and powerful browser. And anything that is powerful needs high energy and here energy refers to the resources like RAM, CPU, and battery. Google Chrome packs with features like Extensions, bookmarks, multiple tabs, and more. And to run like a beast it consumes a lot of resources compared to other browsers. It also opens a lot of background tabs to work properly and if you want to stop multiple processes on Chrome then this guide is for you.
If you normally use the Chrome browser without analysis then you will not notice this issue. But when you check Task Manager it will show that Chrome is running many processes even though you opened only one tab. The number of processes can vary and in my case, it goes to 15+ processes in just one tab. Why are there so many Chrome processes?
When I first noticed that Chrome is running a lot of processes, I explored why Chrome using so may process at the same time. And at last, I found some reasons that caused multiple processes in Chrome. There are few reasons for this issue and here’s what causes multiple processes in Chrome.
- Google Chrome comes with extensions and Plugins support and if you use multiple extensions then it will run all the active extensions in the background. It runs active extensions to provide access to extension and its function without any waiting time. And so the multiple processes that you see in Task Manager also includes the extensions running in the background.
- Google Chrome is popular because it easily handles multiple tabs without any issues. And to keep backup of all the tabs it keeps a copy of running in the background. It is because to avoid data loss if your browser or computer crashes. You must have used the restore option after crashing.
There can be few more reasons for the multiple processes in the Chrome browser. But in our analysis, these two are the main points we noticed.

How to Disable Multiple Processes on Google Chrome
Google Chrome takes a lot of resources but on top it also lets users to configure and reduce the load on your computer as per their needs. So if you are ready to stop multiple Chrome processes then let’s jump into the first method.
Method 1: Disable/Remove temporary used Extensions & Plugins
As we mentioned earlier that Chrome loads all the extensions and plugins and so it runs many processes in the background. The main disadvantage of running multiple processes is it slows down the Chrome browser and even the whole computer if Memory is available in limited quantity. So to avoid this we can remove extensions and plugins that we rarely use on a daily basis.
It will also free up space and load from Google Chrome so that it can run smoothly. Removing any extension from Google Chrome is easy. Here’s how to remove extensions from Chrome.
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Click on the three dots at the top right corner.
- Now go to More Tools > Extensions.
- And in the extension page, you can easily remove or disable any extension you want.
You can also click on the Puzzle like an icon for managing Extensions which is just next to the three-dot menu. This is the basic and first method to which we should give attention. Now let’s move to our second effective method to remove multiple Chrome processes.
Method 2: Kill Chrome Processes using Chrome Task Manager
Google Chrome is a powerful and featured browser which has its own task manager for managing running processes. It is just like the Windows Task Manager but only tracks the process inside the browser. You can also kill processes from Windows Task Manager but there you will not be able to judge which process you have to kill. But in the Chrome Task Manager, it shows a description of each process which provides us enough information about the running process. So let’s see how you can kill multiple Chrome processes using Chrome Task Manager.
- On your, Google Chrome browser click on three dots at the right corner for Chrome Menu.
- Now click on More Tools and select Task Manager.
- It will open the Chrome Task Manager with running processes details.
- If you are only able to see icons then expand the Task section to see the description of the processes.
- Select the process that you want to kill and click the End Process button.
- It will instantly kill that process.
So this is our second solution to fix or stop multiple Chrome processes. This will also let you see all the extensions running in the background and you can close it from there. Now let’s jump to our third method to stop multiple chrome processes.
Method 3: Stop Google Chrome Background Processes
Google Chrome also gives the option to stop background processes that you can select in case background processes are using too many resources.
- Click on three dots at the top right corner on your Google Chrome browser.
- Now from the menu go to Settings.
- Then in the Settings page expand the Advanced settings option.
- And in the Advanced go to System.
- In System Settings you will find an option ‘Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed’
- You can turn it off to stop multiple Chrome background processes.
Method 4: Limit One Process for Single Tab in Chrome
As we mentioned in our second reason for the multiple chrome processes is that Chrome runs more than one process for a single Tab. But you can limit the process to one with a few simple steps. Let’s see what these steps are.
- For this method go to your desktop and right-click on Google Chrome shortcut.
- Then open Properties. You can also open Google Chrome properties from the taskbar.
- In properties, you will find the location of Chrome.exe under the Target section (eg. “C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome Beta\Application\chrome.exe”).
- You need to add –process-per-site in the target after chrome.exe (eg. “C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome Beta\Application\chrome.exe” –process-per-site).
- After adding the process per site, click on Apply > OK.
- Reopen the chrome and now it will only run one process for one tab.
