There have already been several leaks surrounding Samsung’s upcoming foldable devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the rumored Fold 8 Wide. However, a new report suggests that Samsung could change the naming scheme in a rather unexpected way.
According to a report from Sammobile, the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 may launch as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, while the newer foldable model could simply be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8. In other words, the device previously rumored as the “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide” may actually launch under the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 branding.
Such a naming change could create confusion for many users, especially those who closely associate Samsung’s foldables with the traditional Galaxy Z Fold lineup. Some buyers may not even realize the branding shift until they see the device packaging or official marketing material.
Considering these real-world scenarios, the rumored naming change comes as quite a surprising move from Samsung. However, it could turn out to be a smart long-term decision.
The reason is that the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to be larger and more premium than the upcoming new foldable model. Because of that, branding the bigger device as an ‘Ultra’ model actually makes sense. The Ultra tag naturally gives the impression of a more advanced and premium flagship device.
Meanwhile, many users who closely follow leaks and rumors had already become familiar with the name “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide,” and that branding also seemed to fit the device quite well.
There’s also one interesting possibility behind this rumored naming shift. Apple is expected to launch its first foldable later this year as “iPhone Ultra.” Is Samsung’s move just a coincidence, or a calculated branding strategy to better compete with Apple’s upcoming foldable?
The leak comes from a reputable source, which means the rumored name changes could very well be accurate. However, nothing is confirmed until Samsung officially announces the devices.
The upcoming Galaxy foldable devices, including Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8, are expected to launch at Samsung’s next Unpacked event in July. Samsung is also likely to release official One UI 9 alongside the new foldable devices.
