Google Surprises with Early Release of Android 16 Developer Preview

Google kick-starts its Android 16 journey today, surprising everyone with an earlier-than-expected release. Although an earlier release was expected, we did not expect a release this early. Android 16 developer preview goes live for Pixel devices, you can try out the new changes on your phone or tablet.

The first developer preview build comes with the BP21.241018.009 build number and the November 2024 security patch. Talking about the compatible devices, then the anticipated software upgrade is also coming to the Pixel 6. Yes, if you own a Pixel 6 or newer device, you can install the Android 16 developer preview to try out new features and changes.

As always, Google hasn’t revealed much information related to changes coming with the update. There are only 3 changes listed in the press release. The changes are the latest version of Privacy Sandbox, embedded Photo Picker, and APIs that support health records in Health Connect.

This is the start of Android having more frequent API releases as part of our effort to drive faster innovation in apps and devices.

Google

Google is all prepared for the Android 16 release in the second quarter of 2025. The update is expected to be released after Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O. Whereas the previous Android updates were released in the third quarter.

The first developer preview is intended for developer use. If you are a developer you have an opportunity to test your apps for better compatibility. However, anyone with an eligible Pixel phone can install the update.

If you own a compatible Pixel smartphone or tablet, you can install the Android 16 DP1 on your device using a couple of methods. One of the common and easy methods is installing a factory image. If you want to test the new Android 16 Developer Preview, make sure you first backup all your data.
