Google Confirms Android 16 Coming Early Next Year!

Great news for Android users! Google has officially confirmed that Android 16 will release several months earlier than the Android 15 did. This is expected to be the case for other upcoming major Android releases as well.

Android 16 will be released in the second quarter of 2025, which is about three months earlier than Android 15 which was released in the late Q3 2024 to the AOSP. Surprisingly there will be another Android 16 release in the fourth quarter next year, but it will be a minor upgrade that will focus on picking small features and bug fixes.

This means that the Android 16 beta will also start early. So expect the developer preview to start at least 3 months earlier.

Android 16 release schedule

One of the main reasons Google has mentioned for this beneficial change is to better align the release with the flagship Pixel device launch. This year, when Google released Pixel 9, the Android 15 was in the final testing stage, but Google couldn’t include it in the Pixel 9 as it was not ready for stable.

This leads to several issues affecting the software update policy for Pixel devices. So with the decision to release Android 16 early, we can expect the Pixel 10 to launch with Android 16 out of the box.

Another advantage of early release is that it will allow faster innovation and polished release without putting burden on Developers and also save some cost.

With Android 16 launching early next year, we can also expect other brands to start working on their custom OS early and release stable builds early as well.

Along with the latest Pixel flagship, other brands releasing some of their phones after June will also be able to provide latest Android version out of the box.

Get ready for the Android 16 Developer which should be available in next couple of months.
