As the demand for RAM usage by OS, games, apps is increasing, OEMs are now focusing on features like RAM expansion, read and write speed, etc. So far, many OEMs have successfully integrated RAM or RAM Expansion features on their devices. Xiaomi is also one of these OEMs. And so if you have a Xiaomi phone, then with the help of this guide you can enable the memory extension on your Xiaomi phone.
Games and apps now use more resources as they come with better graphics, more features, etc. As for RAM consumption increases, we either need a new device or a solution to handle these apps and games without any problem. Smartphone brands are also aware of this issue and hence most of them are giving users options to increase RAM.
What is Memory Extension?
Memory Extension is a feature on Xiaomi phones running MIUI 12.5 or newer. This new feature does exactly what its name suggests. It adds 1/2/3 GB of RAM by occupying storage. What it means is you can use 1 or 2 or 3 GB from your Internal Storage as additional RAM.
Since RAM memory and storage are different, the performance of additional RAM taken from storage will not be the same as original RAM, but it will give a performance boost to some extent. So it is better to use this feature and get a better gaming and multitasking performance on your Xiaomi phone.
How much you can increase RAM?
- Phones with 256GB Storage or more – 3GB RAM
- Phones with 128GB Storage – 2GB
- Phones with 64GB Storage – 1GB
If you donโt know, the Memory Extension feature is only available to Xiaomi phones with MIUI 12.5 and MIUI 12.5 Enhanced update (or newer). Xiaomi has released MIUI 12.5 Enhanced to its many devices and the majority of phones are getting Memory Extension with Enhanced update. It will be available to more devices in the coming time.
MIUI 12.5 Enhanced is the update that focuses on the device performance instead of new features. These performance modes include Memory Extension, Atomized Memory, Swift Performance, Liquid Storage, etc. The availability of these modes varies as per devices. However, the Memory Extension is available on all Xiaomi phones with MIUI 12.5 Enhanced.

How to Enable Memory Extension on Xiaomi Phones
Xiaomi is planning to roll out the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced to third-batch phones. So if you received the update, you can easily expand RAM on your phone. But if not, then look for your device eligibility and the rollout plan. So if you have already updated your phone, then you can jump into steps to enable RAM expansion on your Xiaomi phone.
- Make sure your Xiaomi phone is running on the latest MIUI 12.5.
- Clean your storage (at least 5GB free space recommended) as it will make use of your deviceโs Internal Storage.
- Now open Settings on your Xiaomi phone.
- Navigate to Additional Settings > Memory Extension.
- Here you can turn on the toggle to enable Memory Extension.
The same RAM Expansion feature is also available on other OEM phones but with different names. So we will be sharing separate guides for different OEMs. In case you have another device and want to increase the RAM of your phone, then you can follow us on Google News (@YTECHB) and Twitter (@YTECHB).
