Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup is here; as always, people have a lot of things to like about the device. The devices will soon be available for purchase in a few days. So, while you might be planning to get your hands on the brand-new iPhone 16, there is one that you, the user, should know – the Always On Display.
The Always On display has been a feature on almost any Android smartphone that comes with an OLED or AMOLED screen. The feature has been on supported Android smartphones for many years. However, when it came to the iPhone side of things, Apple recently implemented it on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. So, the question now is whether the feature is available for the iPhone 16 series.
Does the iPhone 16 come with Always On Display?
Well, just like the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 15 series, only the Pro models of the iPhone 16 series have the Always On Display feature. The base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus miss out on the Always on Display this year.
So, why does Apple skip the Always on Display feature for the base model iPhone 16?
Well, it is done purposely so that if you want to use this feature, you would have to shell out a little more money and get the iPhone 16 Pro or the iPhone 16 Pro Max models.
Now, the iPhone 16 Pro models get the Always on Display simply because of the variable refresh rate display. Also known as the ProMotion display, the screen can change the refresh rate from 120Hz to 1Hz when the Always on Display is active. This reduces the power being consumed by the displays, thus helping to give you a little better battery life.
So, will the base model iPhones in the future ever get the Always on Display? Looks like these base-model iPhones will not get the feature anytime soon.
Previous iPhone Models with Always On Display
The following iPhone models have Always on Display feature:
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 Pro
- iPhone 16 Pro max
If the iPhone 16 Pro lineup is something you don’t want to spend money on, you can always go for the iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 Pro models if they are still available in your region.
If you own the iPhone 16 Pro or the iPhone 16 Pro Max, you can navigate to Settings > Display and Brightness > Always on Display > and turn the toggle on for AOD.
Closing Thoughts
So yes, the iPhone 16 does have the Always on Display feature, but it’s reserved only for the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max models. Now, whether the feature will drop into the iPhone 17 base models next year, we do not know. Knowing how Apple is, they’ll just continue to reserve the feature only for the Pro models and highlight it as an important feature and why you need to get the iPhone 16 models.
