Is the iPhone 16 Waterproof? Answered

Apple has just unveiled the iPhone 16 lineup. One area where the new iPhones see significant improvement is in their build, offering upgraded Ceramic shield glass for the front as well as the aerospace-grade aluminum and titanium builds on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.

The new iPhone starts from $799 and the Pro model from $999. Being a costlier device, many may wonder whether the new iPhone 16 is waterproof or water-resistant. In this guide, I’ll address all your queries regarding the iPhone 16 series’ durability.

Starting from the front, then both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models gain the power of new Ceramic shield glass, which Apple says is “50 percent tougher than the first generation.”

The back panel on the iPhone 16 features a color-infused glass with these shades: Black, Pink, Teal, and Ultramarine. When it comes to the Pro phone, then there’s a Textured matte glass back on all color variants.

Now let’s shed light on how well the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro will withstand daily wear and tear.

Are the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Waterproof?

The iPhone 16 is not waterproof but offers water resistance with an IP68 rating. This Ingress Protection (IP) rating by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) signifies protection from both solid dust particles and water immersion.

The first number in the rating indicates protection against solid dust particles, while, the second digit in the rating, which is “8,” denotes their ability to withstand water immersion.

What Apple Says About iPhone 16’s Durability?

Apple says the new iPhone 16 models are splash, water, and dust-resistant. The latest iPhone withstands submersion in fresh water at a maximum depth of six meters for a duration of up to 30 minutes, which is the same specs as the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15 series.

In practical terms, the iPhone 16 series phones are designed to withstand accidental splashes, spills, or light exposure to water.

Another thing to keep in mind is, that water resistance is not permanent it may diminish over time due to normal wear and tear, also, be aware that water damage is typically not covered under warranty.

Apple advises iPhone users with an IP68 rating under IEC’s standard 60529 to avoid taking the phone to high-pressure activities, swimming, steam room, sauna, and more. Here’s the complete list of recommendations.

  • Swimming or bathing with your iPhone
  • Exposing your iPhone to pressurised water or high-velocity water, such as when showering, water skiing, wakeboarding, surfing, jet skiing and so on
  • Using your iPhone in a sauna or steam room
  • Intentionally submerging your iPhone in water
  • Operating your iPhone outside of the suggested temperature ranges or in extremely humid conditions
  • Dropping your iPhone or subjecting it to other impacts
  • Disassembling your iPhone, including removing screws

What kind of water exposure can the iPhone 16 resist?

iPhone 16 can withstand submersion in up to six meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. All other liquids, including water with salt and chlorine, can damage the phone internally.

Can I Charge my iPhone 16, if Exposed to Water?

No, If your iPhone 16 has been exposed to liquid, turn it off and do not plug in the charger until it is completely dry. If there is water on the back glass, gently wipe it with a soft cloth and allow it to dry completely. Afterward, you can use your accessory to wirelessly charge your iPhone.

Just like any electronic device or smartphone, it’s important to treat your new iPhone 16 with care and follow the company’s guidelines to enjoy its water-resistant capabilities.
