We tested the GCam mod port on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and here’s everything you need to know about installing and using Google Camera on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Camera was one of the centerpiece attractions of the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Samsung aims to maintain its winning formula with its newest flagship, the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The company keeps the camera hardware unchanged from last year on the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Plus, but there’s a notable change in the big boi, Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra introduces an all-new 5x 50MP telephoto camera, replacing the previous 10x 10MP telephoto camera. With the new sensor, users can capture both 5x and 10x shots. The rest of the camera setup remains the same as its predecessor.

The all-new Galaxy S24 Ultra captures great photos from the stock camera app in almost any condition, thanks to the upgraded camera system and AI enhancements. Having a custom app is always a good option and things get better with the Pixel Camera app aka the GCam app. Fortunately, there are a few GCam mod ports compatible with the new Galaxy S24 series phones.

If you are in search of a Google Camera for your Galaxy S24 or Galaxy S24 Ultra, then you landed in the right place. So, let’s explore how it performs on the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Google Camera for Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Low Light (Night) Photography

Capturing images in the night on the Galaxy S24 Ultra with the stock camera is the better choice. As you can see from the images captured by the S24 Ultra, one uses the stock camera and the other uses the GCam port for the S24 Ultra. Both images have been captured quite well, however with the stock cam you can see that it has tried to brighten up the whole image whereas GCam has only brightened up the objects that were nearer to the device.

Note: All Sample Photos are available in full resolution in this Google Drive Folder.

Upon zooming on the images you will find more noise on the image captured by GCam However, the text on the board at the top left corner is more readable than the image captured by the stock camera.

Close Ups

The S24 Ultra lets you take good close-ups thanks to its camera system. If you plan to go for portraits or closeup shots on the S24 Ultra, the stock cam is a much better choice. The capture on the GCam is good but for now, it does not give you any satisfactory background blur and the image quality feels weak.

Low Light Wide Angle

When capturing low-light wide-angle shots, both cameras tend to do a pretty decent job. These two images were taken in a dark room with a bit of light source passing through the windows. As you can see with the stock camโ€™s capture, it has got everything right except for the laptopโ€™s screen which looks overexposed. On the other hand, the GCam capture has got the laptop screen just right. However, it misses out on brightening up the dark areas of the room.

Daytime

One thing that the GCam does better is capture the sky perfectly in daytime shots. Sure you will not be able to get all the tiny details when you zoom into the image but, it does take a fairly balanced image, unlike the stock camera that has changed bits of the colors for the sky. You will get tiny details when you zoom in on the image captured by the stock camera. If you plan to capture images outdoors where there are enough natural light sources, you should use the GCam image.

Here is the sample image where you can see a white chapel captured on a bright afternoon. Again the sock camera seems to be playing with the color of the skies whereas GCam gets the skies done perfectly.

While I would recommend using the GCam port for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it does lack in a few places and hopefully, some updates to the GCam port can help fix this issue, The stock camera app for the S24 Ultra does take good images when you plan to take low light shots, wide-angle shots, and closeup shots.

With the regular daytime shots, it can sometimes be hit or miss under certain lighting conditions. However, a much-needed update for the camera on the S24 Ultra is still due. Maybe once the update has been released we can see many better images on the stock camera that you would not need to install the GCam port on your S24 Ultra.
