Apple announces watchOS 10 with new Smart Stack, Redesigned Apps, Cycling Features, and more

Apple details the tenth generation of watchOS software upgrades at its annual developer conference, WWDC. watchOS 10 will be the major upgrade coming to the Apple Watch later this fall. The newest version of watchOS bags a flurry of new features including redesigned apps, a new Smart Stack, two new watch faces, Cycling and Hiking features, and tools for better mental health.

Smart Stack

Starting from the visuals, then Apple brings back the Smart Stack to the Apple Watch in a completely new way. The widgets are back on the Apple Watch, users can explore the widgets easily with a simple turn of the Digital Crown. The new Smart Stack works great with watch faces like Portraits and offers all important details in the widgets.

New Watch Faces

Apple introduces two new watch faces with watchOS 10. The new widgets are Palette and Snoopy. Apple says, “The Palette face depicts time in a wide variety of colors using three distinct overlapping layers, and as the time changes, the colors on the display also shift.” Whereas the second watch face is the Snoopy and Woodstock, the characters interact and play with the watch hands or react to weather conditions.

Redesigned Apps

Apple redesigned the apps to utilize more of the Apple Watch display. Apple updates the Weather, Stock, Home, Maps, Messages, World Clock, and more apps. You can see the preview of the World Clock app right here.

Health Features

Apple brings improvements to Cycling, letting users connect any Bluetooth-enabled bike accessories such as power meters, speed sensors, and cadence sensors. When cycling the information will be displayed on your iPhone as a live activity, you can see all metrics including Heart Rate Zones, Elevation, Race Route, Cycling Speed View, and more.

Hiking is another health feature that gets an upgrade. Compass app on watchOS 10 generates two new waypoints – a last cellular connection waypoint and a last emergency call waypoint. Apple also adds a new topographic map featuring contour lines and more. For better mental health, users can conveniently long their momentary emotions and daily moods in the Mindfulness app.

Other Changes

You can easily access the Control Center by using the side button, you can double click the digital crown to go back to the app used recently. NameDrop is another change coming with watchOS 10 and iOS 17, which let users quickly share contact information by bringing the Apple Watch and iPhone closer. Offline maps on iPhone can be used on the watch too, Apple Fitness+ introduces custom plans, and more.

Availability

watchOS 10 will be available later this fall for Apple Watch Series 4 and newer models. Currently, it is available for developers, a public beta will be released in July.
