The big messaging platform, WhatsApp is finally working on a much-awaited feature, PiP. Picture in Picture mode already exists for videos links in WhatsApp, for example, videos hosted on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. But with the upcoming feature we will be able to play directly shared video in PiP on WhatsApp.
WABetaInfo, a popular channel known for testing (tracking) upcoming WhatsApp features, has shared its findings from one of the latest WhatsApp beta build. The PiP feature was found in the WhatsApp Beta 24.6.10.74 for iOS.
The Picture in Picture mode for WhatsApp will soon make its way to a public build. Currently, when we play a video that is shared directly over WhatsApp, it opens in a full-screen view. And it doesn’t let us do anything in the WhatsApp when watching the video. But with the PiP mode, the video will play in a floating window within WhatsApp. So you can use WhatsApp while the video is playing in the PiP mode. This will prove to be helpful when you want to continue chatting while watching a video.
However, when you switch to other Apps, the floating video window will be closed. So, it’s not the system-wide Picture-in-Picture mode for WhatsApp videos. It’s only app-level PiP. We could see improved form of PiP in the future for system wide support.
Currently, the PiP mode feature is in beta testing on iOS, but in the future, we may see it in WhatsApp Android beta as well. There is no specific time for when this feature will be available for everyone. But from the testing progress, we can guess it will be first available on iOS.
