Sony is getting close to launching its next premium smartphone, the Xperia 1 VIII. Sony typically releases only two devices each year, and the Xperia 1 VIII will be the main flagship phone for the year, succeeding the Xperia 1 VII.
Sony has shared a short teaser on YouTube and other platforms with the tagline “Next One is Coming.” This is likely teasing the upcoming Xperia 1 VIII. The teaser also features three rings in the same design as appeared in the latest Xperia 1 VIII renders.
According to the official teaser, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII will launch on May 13 at 11AM JST / 4AM CEST. This means that the Sony Xperia 1 VIII will be launching next week. The launch timing closely matches last year’s Xperia 1 VII debut. Sony may also unveil a few additional products alongside the Xperia 1 VIII.
According to recent rumors and leaks, Sony is finally introducing some design changes to its Xperia 1 series, but probably not the kind many were expecting. The update appears to be limited to a redesigned camera module, while the front bezels are expected to remain unchanged.
According to recent renders, the Xperia 1 VIII will feature a triple rear camera setup housed inside a square camera visor, somewhat similar to the design seen on some OnePlus phones. Within the square camera module, two lenses are placed horizontally at the top, while the third lens sits below the left camera.
Rumors also suggest that the Sony Xperia 1 VIII may have a 6.5-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC and will come with 12GB of RAM.
Other rumored specifications of the Sony Xperia 1 VIII include a 48MP telephoto camera, up to 2-day battery life, and of course, the 3.5mm jack. The device may be available in four color options: Graphite Black, Lolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.
The Sony Xperia 1 VIII is rumored to cost €1,868.99 in Germany and £1,728 in the UK. While the launch date is confirmed, other details are based on leaks and rumors, so they should be taken with a grain of salt.
