Many users have complain regarding how complicated the Photos app on iPhone is and how difficult it is to find old photos in it. But with the new iOS 18 update, the Photos app now has a new look and features that makes the app better and easier to use.

Now letโ€™s explore every new Photos app feature one by one.

Biggest Redesign

With iOS 18, the Photos app has received its biggest redesign ever. The new design prioritizes a simpler layout than before. This includes a well-organized library. At the top you get a grid view of all the photos, and below that you can explore the collections and albums.

The app automatically organizes your library in different collections, making it easy to find photos relevant to a specific theme such as peoples, places, days, trips, and more.

Customize Collections

All the collections that are available in the Photos app can be easily customized according to users. You can reorder, hide, add, and remove collections. To do this, scroll down to the last in the Photos app and you will see the Customization & Reorder button.

Trips Collections

The Photos app identifies photos from your trips and saves them under Trips collections. This means you can easily find your specific trips and enjoy those moments again.

Filter Library

The Photos app also gets a filter option for the library. Using the filter button you can narrow down your search by filtering specific collections like screenshots, edited, favorites, and videos, allowing you to easily find the specific media type you are looking for. You can follow our guide to show and hide screenshots using same feature.

Video Speed Control

In iOS 18, the Photos app comes with an option to control speed of videos with high frame rates. This means, you can not increase the playback speed of a video but can decrease it. For example, if a video is taken in 240fps, you can reduce it to 120fps, 60fps, 48fps, 30fps, and 24fps. Now you don’t have to change the fps during the video shoot.

More Utilities

Utilities in Photos now have more options that help you narrow down your search for pictures. You can look for more specific collections such as Documents, Receipts, QR codes, and more, and items youโ€™ve recently edited, viewed, and shared. Here are all the utilities.

It’s now easier to search for photos with specific descriptions. For example, you can search for photos in which someone is wearing blue, or you’re having drinks, lunch, party, marriage, and more.

So these are the new features that you will find in Photos app if you have installed iOS 18 on your iPhone. I think the Photos app still need some changes because everything is in one page that is not a good experience for users. However it is a subjective topic, so can’t speak for others. Anyway, which is your favorite new feature in the Photos app.
