Googleโs Chromecast pumped new life into old TVs, monitors that can display and stream content at a fraction of the cost of a new device. The remote is its primary control mechanism; if that doesnโt work, you cannot watch anything.
Usually, a dead battery pack causes the remote to stop functioning properly, but there are several other reasons. We have had our fair share of Chromecast remote problems, and some tricks have helped us regain control of the device.
In this post, weโll talk about all the possible reasons why your Chromecast remote is acting up and multiple effective ways to fix it. Letโs begin.
Reasons for Chromecast Remote Not Working
It could be one of the following issues that are preventing the remote from working:
- Dead batteries
- Physical Damage
- No clear line of sight between the device and the remote
- Wrong input selection
- Old Google TV version
- Hardware defect with the remote or device
6 Methods to Fix Google Chromecast Remote Not Working
Try the following steps sequentially to troubleshoot the Chromecast remote not working issue.
1. Check the Remote Batteries and Hardware
We know that replacing remote batteries is an overstated fix, but it can solve your problem in most cases. Even if you have recently swapped out Chromecast remote batteries, changing them could revive the remote. Just do a quick swap and then check if the Chromecast is controllable now.
Another overlooked aspect is the signs of damage to the Chromecast remote. You might have accidentally sat on it or flung it, or kids/pets can sometimes unintentionally destroy it.
So, look for any cracks on the body, the infrared light, or missing buttons. You must replace the remote if you see any irreversible damage signs.
2. Ensure a Clear Line of Sight
Chromecast is a tiny device, and other large objects like a player, a console, or decorative items can block its line of sight. When you press the buttons on the remote, the signal wonโt transfer properly.
So, remove all the unnecessary clutter spread in front of the Chromecast and then retry with the remote to check if the device responds.
3. Incorrect Input Choice
Chromecast is an HDMI device; you must use the correct option to view the interface. Often, users are in an incorrect input mode and think the remote isnโt working properly.
Use the TV remote to switch the input to the correct HDMI port. Then, restart Chromecast and check if the interface appears on the TV. If not, there might be a problem with the cables or the port itself.
4. Pair the Remote Again
You can try reconnecting the remote to the TV. To do so, you must access the settings panel, which would be possible without a remote. But how to do such sorcery? Google TV app can help you with this issue.
Simply launch the app and do a paring session by entering the code. After that, youโll get a digital remote-like interface on your screen. Access the Settings and go to Remotes & Accessories > Chromecast Remote > Forget. Select the Yes option and then exit the page.
Now, press the Home and Back button to start the pairing process. Youโll see a tiny light on the remote flashing aggressively. Commence the pairing process and check if it works with the Chromecast now.
5. Update Chromecast Software
Timely updates ensure that your Chromecast functions properly and does not have any bugs from the previous version. Use your phone to open the Settings page and check for updates.
Install them and then reboot the TV to apply the update and check if the remote works now.
6. Reset the Chromecast Remote
The last resort is to reset the Chromecast remote. Remove the batteries and press and hold the Home button. Put the batteries back in the remote while doing so.
Hold the Home button while the LED light is glowing, and once it starts to show a pulse pattern, release the Home button.
Now, your Chromecast remote is reset, and you must repair it with the device.
7. Contact Google Support
If the above methods didnโt revive your remote, itโs time to contact the official support channels. They can guide you with remote troubleshooting or arrange a replacement if necessary.
Meanwhile, you can use the Google TV app to control your Chromecast and stream shows and movies.
These were the seven methods to fix the Chromecast remote problems. Start with a battery replacement and physical inspection, then move on to other fixes.
