When it comes to the Galaxy S25 Ultra or any Ultra smartphone from Samsung, a lot of users pick it up not only because of the top-of-the-line cameras but also for the S Pen, something that almost no smartphone comes with nowadays. Apart from drawing and taking notes with the S Pen, it also acts as a remote camera shutter button and performs several Air Actions, making the S Pen a smart stylus.

Well, with the introduction of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, all the smartness that we have seen with the Galaxy S pen over these years now comes to an end. The S Pen is still present with the Galaxy S25 Ultra but is now just a basic stylus. So, will you be able to use other S Pens with the Galaxy S25 Ultra? You’ll find out here.

Galaxy S25 Ultra – No Smart S Pen

The new S Pen with the Galaxy S25 Ultra is just a basic stylus. With the S Pen now stripped of Bluetooth and wireless S Pen charging, you can say goodbye to the fancy air commands and gestures that could be done by waving the S Pen around. While these functionalities will no longer be available, you can continue to make use of the Pen Up and Pentastic app to do your drawings and customize the S Pen pointer and sound effects.

Does the Galaxy S25 Ultra support older S Pens?

While the older Galaxy S Pens come with Bluetooth and wireless charging support, it is possible to pair and use it with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, you will not be able to charge the S Pen with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, as the slot for the S Pen no longer has the wireless charging coils for the S Pen.

The moment your Galaxy S pen runs out of charge, it will simply work as a basic stylus. Also, do not try to force any older S pens into the Galaxy S25 Ultra as it may not fit, and you might end up damaging your S Pen.

Note: Although, Air Actions can’t be used via this year’s S Pen, Samsung has now confirmed that you can still use a Bluetooth S Pen for the feature on your Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, no other information is available at this time.

Will the Galaxy S25 Ultra S Pen work with Ultra/Note devices?

Since the new S Pen has no Bluetooth capabilities, the S Pen will simply work as a stylus that can be used to select items or draw on your screen. You are better off using the S Pen that came with your respective Galaxy Ultra or Galaxy Note devices. There is no sense in downgrading from a smart S Pen to a basic S Pen.

Why did Samsung downgrade the S Pen with the Galaxy S25 Ultra?

One of the reasons was to make the Galaxy S25 Ultra slimmer and narrower. Additionally, there is also a larger heat sink that is used to cool down the S25 Ultraโ€™s Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC.

The other reason that Samsung have removed the smart features from the S pen for the S25 Ultra is by the data that shows only a small percentage of users have been utilizing the smart features.

It is a shame that the S Pen has been downgraded to the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Samsung is likely to continue with a basic S Pen for future Galaxy Ultra models unless they decide to make the S pen smarter again with the Galaxy S26 lineup. Who knows? What if Samsung ditches the S Pen altogether for its future Ultra devices and makes it an accessory that needs to be purchased separately? We hope that this doesn’t happen, but we can never tell what Samsung has got under its sleeves.
