Apple has rolled out a minor yet important security improvement update for iPhones. The iOS 26.3.1(a) update is now available for eligible iPhone models. Unlike regular updates, this is a background security update designed to enhance system protection.
The security update is also available for iPad and Mac devices, as iPadOS 26.3.1(a) and macOS Tahoe 26.3.1(a), respectively. The iOS 26.3.1(a) update comes with build number 23D771330a.
As mentioned earlier, iOS 26.3.1(a) is a small background security improvement update. Here’s what’s mentioned in the official update page:
“This Background Security Improvement provides additional protection and is recommended for all users.”
This update specifically addresses an issue related to WebKit. Here’s more information about it:
Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may bypass Same Origin Policy.
Description: A cross-origin issue in the Navigation API was addressed with improved input validation.
If you’re on an iOS 26.3 update, you can find and install the update from Settings > General > Software update. However, if you’ve already upgraded to iOS 26.3.1, you can check the update in Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements. You can opt for Automatic install for these background security improvements or manually install them by tapping on the Install button.
If you encounter any issues with these background security updates, you can even uninstall them. To do so, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements. On this page, you’ll find the latest security update installed. Tap on the ‘i’ icon to see the option to remove the update.
