Android XR OS announced for VR and Mixed-Reality Devices

Google has announced Android XR, a new AI-powered operating system for virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality headsets and glasses. XR, short for Extended Reality is the Google’s direct response to Apple’s visionOS. Google made the new OS in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm.

The Android XR release preview is now available for developer with support for essential tools like ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR. This enables developers to start building apps tailored for the new Android XR OS.

Google has also confirmed Samsung is working on a headset project named ‘Moohan’ which will be the first device to feature Android XR OS and will launch next year, i.e, 2025.

Google is also working on enhancing its apps like Google Maps, Google Chrome, YouTube, Google TV, Google Photos for Android XR environment. Circle to Search, one of the latest useful Android features will also be available on Android XR.

Android XR will also feature Google Play, giving users access to a number of apps and games from the Google Play Store.

Android XR is AI-powered, with Gemini being the main guide for users. It will work across the system, meaning users can interact with it in any part of the OS. You can even ask Gemini about what you see on the screen, making it an interactive experience.

The Android XR OS will be released to the Public in 2025. It would be fun to compare visionOS and Android XR in terms of UI, smoothness and most importantly app and game compatibility.
