You are reading about how to fix Windows cannot be Installed to this disk. So let’s find out the methods to solve the problem.

Windows cannot be Installed to this disk solution

  • Solution to MBR partition problem
  • Solution to GPT partition problem

Fix MBR Partition table problem:

*Follow these steps if the problem is Windows cannot be Installed to this disk. The selected Disk has an MBR Partition table. Otherwise, follow steps which are mentioned in GPT Problem section below.

Method #1. Using Rufus

Step 1>> Don’t format any drive when this issue encountered.

Step 2>> Cancel the installation part and Reboot to windows which is already installed.

Step 3>> If you already formatted C drive, then you can use another computer.

Step 4>> Download Rufus Software which is around 2MB.

Step 5>> Run Rufus as an Administrator and now Attach Pen drive to your PC.

Step 6>> Rufus will automatically detect Pen drive. Select ISO file of your windows.

Step 7>> After iso selection selects MBR partition scheme for BIOS and UEFI in Partition scheme and Target system type option.

Step 8>> Then just start the process by tapping on Start. Wait for some time to complete the process.

Step 9>> Now you are ready to go. Go to Boot option and install Windows. This time no problem will occur.

This is the easy procedure to solve the problem “Windows cannot be installed to this disk”. And this procedure does not require any command, just follow the steps given above you are good to go.

Method #2. Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disc

The problem Windows cannot be installed to this disk The selected Disk has an MBR Partition table.  It comes because the device you are using is not in MBR format whereas the Disk is in MBR format. So to match both Disk and the device we can convert the disk to GPT Disk format. So Let’s see how to convert MBR Disk to GPT Disc.

Step 1>> During the installation procedure, open the Command Window using Shift+F10 or Fn+Shift+F10.

Step 2>>  Now enter the following commands on Command Windows.

Commands:

  • diskpart – To enter into diskp artition setup.
  • list disk – To list the disks in the PC.
  • select disk DN (DN is the Disk Name where you want to install Windows) – To select the particular disk to convert it into MBR format.
  • clean – To format the drive.
  • convert gpt – To convert the disk from GPT to MBR.
  • exit – To close the Command Window.

Note:- clean command will delete all partitions or volumes on the disk.

This will change the disk format to GPT. And this method will work without any problem. So go with this method without any hesitation.

Fix GPT Partition table problem:

*Follow these steps if the problem is Windows cannot be Installed to this disk. The selected Disk is of the GPT Partition style.

Method #1. Using Rufus

All the steps are same as above except step 7. So, in this case, you have to select GPT partition scheme for UEFI in Partition scheme and target system type.

Step 7>> After iso selection, selects GPT partition scheme for UEFI in Partition scheme and Target system type option.

Step 8>> Then just start the process by tapping on Start. Wait for some time to complete the process.

Step 9>> Now you are ready to go. Go to Boot option and install Windows. This time no problem will occur.

This is the easiest method that can find on the Internet. I will recommend going for it if you don’t want to go with long procedures. Although I am going to mention some other methods so that you can use them if it doesn’t work.

Method #2. Convert GPT Disk to MBR Disc

This is another easy solution to the problem “Windows cannot be installed to this Disk”. For this method, you don’t need any software. Here you just need to convert GPT Disk (Disk where you are going to install windows) to MBR Disk. Let’s check out the procedure to convert Disk partition.

Step 1>> During the installation procedure, open the Command Window using Shift+F10 or Fn+Shift+F10.

Step 2>>  Now enter the following commands on Command Windows.

Commands:

  • diskpart – To enter into disk partition setup.
  • list disk – To list the disks in the PC.
  • select disk DN (DN is the Disk Name where you want to install Windows) – To select the particular disk to convert it into MBR format.
  • clean – To format the drive.
  • convert mbr – To convert the disk from GPT to MBR.
  • exit – To close the Command Window.

Note:- clean command will delete all partitions or volumes on the disk.

Now the disk is converted to MBR format, so now restart the installation procedure. This will solve the problem – “Windows cannot be installed to this disk”.

Conclusion

Both the methods are easy to follow and effective. You can follow any of the two methods, but remember to see which disc partition error you are facing (MBR & GPT). So just follow the methods and fix the problem – Windows cannot be installed to this disk.

  1. OK, so really confused.

Windows will not load because disk is MBR so tells me to change to GPT.

I do this and try to install, only for Windows installation to stop because “partition is not MBR”…

Windows is genuine download from Microsoft, loaded onto bootable USB stick. Target drive is 256 SSD. I’ve used Rufus (v3.5) and keep chasing my tail!

    Any ideas?
