WhatApp is working on another feature related to disappearing messages for both Android and iOS. It will give users more control over how messages disappear. WhatsApp began testing view-once or read-once disappearing messages on Android last month and has now started testing the same feature on iOS as well.
With this new feature, messages will disappear after the recipient reads them. Users will also be able to choose how long the message remains available after it has been viewed. On both Android and iOS, you will be able to choose between 5 minutes, 1 hour, and 12 hours. This will work alongside the existing disappearing messages feature.
For example, if you choose the 5-minute option and the recipient reads the message, it will automatically disappear five minutes after being viewed. However, if the recipient never opens the message, it will automatically expire after 24 hours. This adds an extra layer of privacy and could be useful in certain situations.
The new feature was spotted in the WhatsApp Testflight beta version 26.19.10.72 by WABetaInfo. The source is well known for uncovering upcoming WhatsApp features, so there’s a good chance this feature could make its way to the public release in the near future.
Currently, the new disappearing message feature is available only to a limited number of users enrolled in the TestFlight beta program, but it is expected to roll out to more users in the coming weeks.
The new After Reading option remains optional, even if disappearing messages are enabled, so users have full control over it. You can enable the feature by heading to Settings > Privacy > Default Message timer > After reading. The After Reading disappearing Messages feature can be configured either on a per-chat basis or applied globally across all chats.
