While smartphone brands compete to offer the longest software support to their smartphones, smart TVs often get little or no attention at all. Even premium smart TVs hardly get updates after a year. But that could change as Samsung planning to adjust update policy for Smart TV. The tech giant will offer 7 years of Tizen OS updates to its AI smart TVs.
If Samsung brings this policy, it could be a big thing for smart TVs as it will encourage other brands to improve their update policy to compete in the market. Overall, users will benefit from this. As of now, smart TVs get updates for around 2 or 3 years, however, getting one major update feels impossible on many TVs.
The news comes from KED Global, sharing the statement from Yong Seok-woo, president and head of the Samsung TV division. Hereโs what Yong Seok-woo mentioned in the latest business briefing:
"With the seven-year free upgrade of Tizen applied to AI TVs, we will widen the gap in market share with Chinese companies.โ
The decision has been made to compete with Chinese companies, which are growing faster because of affordable prices, which is threatening Samsungโs business. This commitment by Samsung will help them stay on top in the Smart TV business.
The new update policy will first apply to AI-powered TVs launched in 2024 and 2023. So if you have an AI-powered Samsung Smart TV launched last year or later, you can expect to get updates for up to seven years on your TV.
Once the updated policy take effect, users can also expect more AI features joining though future updates. For unawares, all the Smart TVs from Samsung run on Tizen OS. So the statement is for every AI powered Samsung smart TV.
