Adding your Samsung TV to Alexa allows you to control your TV with voice commands. Imagine turning on your TV, adjusting the volume, or switching channels, you can do all with Alexa device. How to Connect Samsung TV to Alexa [2020 or Later TV Models]
If you have a Samsung Smart TV that comes with a built-in Alexa app, follow the below steps to connect it to Alexa. You can easily check for Alexa support. If there is a Mic button with Audio icon on TV Remote or there is a pre-installed Alexa app then your TV is Alexa supported. Some newer Samsung TV models also don’t have Alexa built-in.
Step 1: Turn on your Samsung TV and open the Alexa app. If the Alexa app is not available on your TV, jump to the next method.
Step 2: Sign in to your Amazon account either by scanning the QR code visible on the TV’s screen or by going to Amazon’s site to enter the code.
Step 3: Follow the instructions to connect your account. Once you do that your Samsung TV will be registered with your Amazon account.
Step 4: Finally, select whether you want to turn on Alexa Hands-Free (Available on limited TV Models). Once enabled, you can talk to your TV Remote without pressing the Mic button. You can use Alexa wake command.
The TV remote continuously listen for you to say the wake word – Alexa, Amazon, or Echo. If you don’t opt for it, you need to long-press the microphone button on the remote control to use Alexa commands.
How to Connect Samsung TV to Alexa [Earlier TV Models]
If your Samsung Smart TV does not have a built-in Alexa app, you need to follow the below steps to connect your TV to Alexa.
Note: With this method, you can execute limited basic commands like On/Off TV, Change Volume, Play/Pause Content and a couple of more basic commands. While on Alexa supported TV, you can execute all sort of commands like opening certain app.
Step 1: Install both the Amazon Alexa (Android, iPhone) and SmartThings (Android, iPhone) apps if you don’t already have them.
Step 2: Next, connect both the Alexa device and Samsung TV to the same WiFi network.
Step 3: Register your Samsung TV in the SmartThings app with same Samsung account as on TV. You can see this guide on how to register. To check for the Samsung account on TV, go to Settings > General > System Manager > Samsung Account.
Step 4: On your Phone, open Alexa app and login with your details. Now go to More > Skills & Game.
Step 5: Search for SmartThings and enable it. The app will redirect to browser and ask to link the SmartThings account, so follow the steps in the browser.
Step 6: Once you Authorize Alexa to access SmartThings devices, it will automatically search and Add your Samsung TV in Alexa app.
You can now use your Android or iOS device to control your TV with voice commands. As mentioned, you can use limited commands.
How to Connect Samsung TV to Echo Dot
If you have an Alexa Echo device, you can also use it to control your Samsung TV with voice. It’s quite similar to the last method. And also the commands you can execute are limited.
Step 1: First follow all the steps above to connect your Samsung TV to Alexa app.
Step 2: Ensure your Echo Dot or another Alexa Speaker is connected to the Alexa app on your phone. You can use this guide for detailed instructions.
Step 3: Now on Alexa app, go to Devices tab, followed by your Samsung TV.
Step 4: Under General, you will find Linked Alexa Device Option. Open it.
Step 5: Here you will see your Echo Dot or another Alexa speaker connected to same account. Tap on the one you want to connect.
Step 6: This will take few seconds and you will be good to go. You can confirm by giving commands like ‘Alexa, Turn Off my Samsung TV’ or ‘Turn On my Samsung TV.’
Note: Don’t forget to change your TV name to something easy, as you need to say the exact same name mentioned in the Alexa app.
Alexa Commands to Control your TV
After connecting your Samsung TV to Alexa, you can easily control it with your voice commands. Below are some commands you can try:
- “Alexa, turn [on/off] the TV.”
- “Alexa, turn the volume [up/down] on the TV.”
- “Alexa, mute the TV name.”
- “Alexa, channel [up/down] on the TV.”
- “Alexa, change channel to [channel number] on the TV.”
- “Alexa, change the input to [input name] on the TV.”
- “Alexa, [play/pause/stop/resume] on the TV.”
- “Alexa, show [comedy/drama/romance] movies.”
- “Alexa, play [movie name] on [streaming app].”
- “Alexa, open [app name] on the TV.”
Many of these commands will not work if your TV doesn’t come with Alexa built-in.
