May is always a good time for Android fans. Google just concluded its The Android Show event, and as you would expect, they revealed their brand new operating system – Android 17. For a lot of people, this might just seem like a version upgrade and a few subtle changes here and there. However, that’s not true.
While Android 17 is an upgrade, there are a ton of new features that make Android 17 unique in its own way, and have also had many Android smartphone users now want the new Android 17 update to their smartphone, regardless of the smartphone brand they use.
So, what’s new with Android 17? Let’s take a look.
Everything New With Google’s Android 17 OS
Android 17 has an internal codename, Cinnamon Bun, which is used by developers of the operating system. Android 17 will begin rolling out to Google’s lineup of eligible Pixel devices, followed by a bunch of Samsung Galaxy smartphones in the coming months. Here’s what’s new with Android 17.
Emojis Finally Get an Overhaul
Emojis have become an important part of everyone’s day-to-day life on social media and in messages. Google has finally revamped over 4,000 emojis from the basic flat-styled emojis to better 3D styling that contains more depth as well as detailing. These new emojis will first show up on Google’s Pixel lineup of smartphones in the coming months.

Gemini Intelligence Upgrades
Google has upgraded its AI assistant to now perform even more smart functions. The new update will let Gemini access and function across various apps to perform specific tasks on your behalf. As an example that was showcased at the event, when you have a grocery list on your screen, Gemini will now create a shopping list of all the necessary items with any of the quick commerce delivery apps that you can choose to add and get delivered to your place.

New Pause Point Digital Wellbeing Feature
While your smartphone is useful, it can be very distracting, especially with the number of social media apps that you might have. Digital Wellbeing now gets a new Pause Point feature that lets you select distracting apps on your phone, which then causes a 10-second delay when you try to launch those apps. The feature will also bring in a few breathing exercises and ask you to open up productivity apps.

On-Screen Reactions
You may have seen a ton of TikToks, Reels, and YouTube shorts where content creators add a video of their face when reading and resting to content on their screen. Well, Google will now let you easily get your front camera enabled when you are screen recording content for your social media. This is the best feature for those who have been creating reaction content, and also perfect for those users who plan on creating a reaction account on their favorite social media platform.

Improved Switching Between iPhone and Android
Now, when you decide to switch from an iOS device to a new Android smartphone, you can easily transfer data wirelessly from your iOS device running iOS 26.3 or newer. You can easily transfer content such as files, messages, contacts, and even your eSIMs.

Increased Support for Quick Share and Apple AirDrop
For a while, only Google and Samsung smartphones had the ability to share files via Quick Share. But starting with the rollout of Android 17, users with smartphones from brands such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Honor will soon be able to use Quick Share for quick and seamless file transfers.
Android smartphone users will soon be able to generate QR codes for iPhone users who can easily receive files directly into their iCloud storage.
To make things even better, popular messaging platform WhatsApp will be getting Quick Share and AirDrop integration later this year.
Real Time Transcription by Rambler AI
You can now rely on accurate transcriptions when using Rambler for speech-to-text conversations. Rambler will remove filler words or words that don’t have any meaning to your sentence or message that you are trying to share. Rambler AI comes under the Gemini Intelligence umbrella.
Create Fun Home Screen Widgets
With the help of AI, you can now create widgets according to your choice with the new Create My Widget feature. The widgets can be created by using natural language prompts to generate widgets for weather, meal planning, sports score tracking, and more.
Google Gemini Baked Into Google Chrome
If you use Google Chrome as the main web browser on your Android smartphone, you can now use Gemini to perform several browser-related tasks, such as auto browse, book appointments, and even reserve parking spots for your vehicle. You can also add these appointments from Google Chrome into Gmail or the Google Calendar apps.

Live Threat Detection Upgrades
To protect the users from scams, Android 17 will begin scanning apps for suspicious behavior, such as SMS forwarding, hidden background launches, and even check to see if accessibility features are being misused by a particular app or apps.
Overall improved Security Upgrades
With an increase in digital scams and fraud taking place, Google is now pushing a new spoofing protection feature that will automatically cut calls coming from a spoofed number. There’s also an improved feature for those users who have specific bank apps installed.
Now, whenever your bank representative is calling you, Android 17 will first ask the app if the call is a legit call from the bank or financial institution. If the call is legit, as stated by the app, the user can answer the call. But if it’s not a legitimate call, the call will be declined instantly. While this feature was announced with Android 17, it will be available on devices running Android 11 and newer.
Reporting a sot device is better thanks to the Find Hub feature in Android 17 that lets you remotely lock your device behind biometrics as well as a password or PIN, which prevents anyone who might know your PIN or password from getting access to your phone.
