Ahead of the holiday season, Google has surprised everyone by releasing the second developer preview of Android 16. With this incremental release, developers can further optimize their apps for the next version of Android.

Google says, the Android 16 DP2 brings several changes including changes designed to enhance the app experience, improve battery life, and boost performance while minimizing incompatibilities.

Additionally, Google introduced a new haptics API which is available in the DP2 and Android 16. The new API will bring more control over device haptics. With the second developer preview, you can use a photo picker to search within cloud media providers, a new activity intensity data type in Health Connect, and improvements across the system.

If you own the Pixel smartphone with an ultra-sonic fingerprint sensor, which is available on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, you can unlock your device even when the screen is off.

The second developer preview comes with the BP21.241121.009 build number and the December 2024 security patch. If you own a Pixel 6 or newer device, you can install the Android 16 developer preview to try out new features and changes.

If you own a compatible Pixel smartphone or tablet, you can install the Android 16 DP2 on your device using a couple of methods. One of the common and easy methods is installing a factory image. If you want to test the new Android 16 Developer Preview, make sure you first backup all your data.
