Google Maps gets Gemini-powered Ask Maps and new Immersive Navigation

Summarize This Article:

Google has released a major update for Google Maps, which is now powered by Gemini to introduce some highly anticipated features like Ask Maps and more. With Gemini integration, Google Maps becomes even more powerful, enabling conversational interaction for navigation and related queries.

The Gemini-powered Ask Maps feature lets you ask questions about places using natural language. For example, you can ask things like “Does this place have parking?” or “Where can I charge my phone?” and more. You can also continue the conversation with follow-up questions, making it easier to find what you need without manually searching for locations.

Gemini analyzes reviews, photos, place details, and web information to deliver accurate answers and recommendations. All you need to do is tap the Ask Maps chip located just below the search bar, and you can ask anything related to Maps, such as discovering places, planning trips, building routes, getting activity recommendations, and more.

Google has also introduced Immersive Navigation, a major redesign of the turn-by-turn navigation. It shows 3d buildings, traffic lights, crosswalks, realistic road layouts, and more. You could say it’s similar to the 3D navigation view available in Apple Maps.

The new immersive 3D view gives you a clearer look at what’s ahead with smart zooming and transparent buildings. The Smarter Route Planning feature also explains why a route is recommended, highlighting details like traffic conditions, toll roads, parking near the destination, and more.

The Ask Maps feature is now rolling out to Google Maps on Android and iOS in the US and India. However, Immersive Navigation feature is currently rolling out only in the US, with availability expected to expand to more regions over the coming months.
