Recovery Mode is a useful feature of the iPhone, allowing users to restore their devices. However, accessing recovery mode on the iPhone can be challenging. This is because the feature is not available within the software; rather, it’s a part of the system and cannot be accessed through settings or an app. In this guide, I will walk you through the steps on how to put an iPhone into Recovery Mode and how to exit Recovery Mode.
Recovery mode comes in handy when you forget your lock screen password. Using recovery mode, you can erase your iPhone and you will be able to set it up again. Yes, you will need a backup to iCloud or a local backup to get your data back.
If you find yourself here, it’s likely that you’ve forgotten your lock screen password. Besides the option to erase an iPhone without access to Settings, Recovery Mode may not seem particularly useful for the average user. Fortunately, accessing Recovery Mode is quite easy. All you need is a one time guide, so let’s get started.
How to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
The process to enter recovery mode varies by device. For most new iPhones it’s the same, but for older generation iPhones, the process is a little different. Don’t worry, here I will share the method for all iPhones.
Requirements:
- You will need a Mac or Windows PC (Windows 10 or newer)
- iTunes installed (in case of Windows PC)
- iPhone cable
For iPhone 8 and Newer:
- Connect your iPhone with your PC or Mac. If you see a prompt on iPhone, select Trust.
- Press and hold the Side and Volume Down key together until the power slider appears.
- Use the slider to turn off your iPhone.
- When the iPhone is switched off, press and hold the Side key.
- Keep holding the Side button until you see the Recovery Mode screen. Recovery screen is the one that shows cable and a laptop.
If the iPhone boots into the system, you need to try the process again exactly as mentioned. This way you can easily get into the Recovery Mode on iPhone 8 and Newer.
For iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 Models:
- Connect your iPhone 6 or 7 with Mac or PC using its cable. If it ask for authorization, tap Trust.
- Press and hold the Side button to bring the power off slider.
- Use the slider to turn off your iPhone.
- Now press and hold the Volume down button until you see the Recovery screen. If you have iPhone 6s follow the next method after turning off your iPhone.
As you can see the only change from the first method is of the buttons that we need to use for entering iPhone Recovery mode.
For iPhone SE (1st gen), iPhone 5s and Older:
If you have iPhone 6s, turn it off using the above method and then follow this method. Old iPhone models have a button on the top which is used to turn off device. And so the steps are a bit different for iPhone 6s, iPhone SE 1st generation, iPhone 5s and earlier.
- First connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac using the cable.
- Press and hold the Top button on your iPhone. Then use the slider to turn off your iPhone.
- Once your iPhone is turned off, press and hold the Home button until you see the recovery screen.
- If it boot into System and not into the recovery mode, then you need to try again from Step 1.
So this is how you can get into Recovery Mode on your iPhone. After booting into recovery mode, you can use Finder or iTunes to erase your iPhone for a fresh set up. As mentioned earlier, you can use this in case you forgot your Lock screen password.
If you have backup and your iCloud ID, things will be pretty straight forward after erasing your iPhone.
How to Exit iPhone Recovery Mode
When you restore your iPhone in recovery mode, then the iPhone will automatically restart into the system. But if you changed your mind and want to boot back from recovery mode, you can easily exit the iPhone Recovery Mode.
To get out of Recovery Mode, remove the cable and then press and hold the Side button and wait until you see Apple logo. Once the logo appear you can let go of the button and wait for the iPhone to boot into the system.
So this was the complete guide on entering and exiting iPhone Recovery Mode. I hope you found the guide useful.
