The fourth installment of the game was announced way back in 2017 and has ever since been in development. Recently a fan preview was released and the release date for the game was revealed as Fall of 2021. The game will be available on Windows PCs via Steam, Microsoft Store, and the Xbox Game Pass for PC.
Age of Empires 4 Gameplay
There will be a total of eight civilizations in the game, out of which four of them have been revealed; namely English, Mongols, Delhi Sultanate, and Chinese. And four ages to choose from i.e. Dark, Feudal, Castle, and Imperial Ages.
Delhi Sultanate and Mongol civilizations are now finally playable. While playing as Delhi Sultanates you can now use elephants to attack your opponent’s civilizations. Meanwhile, the Mongols will be following their nomadic life as they will be traveling off to a newer stone pile and build their civilization there. Also, Mongolian archers can now fire at any particular angle while being on the move.
The Mongolian hero units also seem to have new special abilities as seen in the fan preview. They are able to light up blue fireworks which could mean special skills or abilities being put into use. With all the upgrades and features of each civilization, you can now place archers right on top of castle walls, something that was never seen in other games of the Age of Empire series.
Campaign Modes
So far the only confirmed campaign mode is the Norman Campaign. This campaign mode calls in for a fight to take over the crown and control over the whole of England and France. There are three more campaign modes that are yet to be revealed.
Update June 14th: Release date, minimum system requirements and pre-order
At the Xbox and Bethesda E3 showcase, Xbox One Studios revealed the release date for Age of Empires IV. The game will be released on the 28th of October 2021. With that being said, the game is available for pre-order on Steam as well as the Microsoft Store. There minimum requirements for PC have also been revealed. A system with an Intel i5 6300U paired with 8 gigs of RAM along with Intel HD 500 graphics or better should be suitable enough to run the game. The game size is approximately 93 GB.
Conclusion
The game has brought in a mixed feeling among Age of Empire fans. There are a few issues with regards to the graphics not being perfect or even the tools and weapons being used being downsized as well. Especially when you take a look the 2019 gameplay reveals the assets seem to have shrunken in size. Also, there seem to be problems with how the arrows seem to be firing which does not look natural. The positive sides are that roads are now automatically being created and when you upgrade any building, it and the surroundings are also upgraded which is pretty good for a city building game in 2021.
A big disappointment or worry is when there are actually a few stutters in the gameplay. What would be the recommended and minimum specs to run is unknown as of now.
