A much-awaited feature is finally coming to one of the most popular messaging platforms, WhatsApp. WhatsApp has announced voice message transcripts for its platform. This means you no longer need to play audio messages at inconvenient times, as you can read the transcribed message instead.

WhatsApp has officially announced voice message transcript feature which will be rolled out globally in the coming weeks. At first, this feature will be available with support for only select languages. WhatsApp will expand this feature to support more languages later.

Voice Message Transcripts Language support list:

  • Android: English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian
  • iOS: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Arabic are supported on iOS 16+. The following additional languages are supported on iOS 17+: Danish, Finish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish and Thai.

I’ve been waiting for this feature for so long, as there are times when I can’t play audio messages, for example, when I’m in a office or a crowded area where it might distract others or when loud noise makes it hard to hear. But with the voice message transcripts, we can simply read audio message.

Voice messages will not be automatically transcribed, you will get the option to transcribe the message you want. But, you have to enable this feature first.

To enable voice message transcript in WhatsApp, go to WhatsApp settings > chats > voice message transcripts. Here you can enable the feature along with your preferred language.

Once the feature is enabled, you can long-press on any voice message and tap Transcribe. WhatsApp says transcripts are generated on the device itself and are protected by end-to-end encryption.

Note: On iOS, Siri must be enabled for transcripts to work.

If you get a error message like ‘Transcript unavailable,’ it could be due to the following reasons:

  • Your transcript language setting doesn’t match the language of the voice message.
  • Some words aren’t recognized, possibly due to background noise.
  • The voice message language isn’t supported.
