The recently launched OnePlus 13s finally marks an end to the legacy Alert Slider. It is now replaced by a multi-function button called the ‘Plus Key’. While the fans are not very happy with the switch, I see that as a step in the right direction, as it is more versatile and can do a lot of functions other than controlling the sound profile.
The upcoming OnePlus Nord 5 and eventually, all the upcoming OnePlus devices will have the new Plus Key button. Anyway, if you have the OnePlus 13s or any other OnePlus device with Plus Key, this post is for you. We have outlined below the overall functions of the button, along with how to customize it.
Everything about Plus Key
So it all starts with the OnePlus 13T, which becomes the first OnePlus device to feature the ‘Plus Key’. However, the OnePlus 13s, which is a slightly modified version of the 13T, actually becomes the first gadget outside China to pack to eliminate the Alert Slider and bring in the Plus Key button.
It is a small tactile button housed on the left-hand side of the gadget. It looks a lot like the Action Key button on iPhone. It is a customizable button, meaning you can control its function from the Settings. As of right now, it only triggers the preset function or works after you do a short press-and-hold on it.
All functions of the Plus Key
As mentioned earlier, the Plus Key can support a lot of functions. By default, it is set to the “Plus Mind” feature. This is basically like a virtual mind or space inside your smartphone. Doing a short press and hold on the button activates it. It works by recognizing the content on your screen. If there’s any important event or travel details on the screen, AI will make a summary of it, and the details will be saved to the Plus Mind application. You can use this feature to save summaries of the news, articles and even your favorite storybook. The feature is not very mature for now, but it gets the job done.
Alongside the Plus Mind, you can set the Plus Key function to:
- Control Sound Profile (Ring, Volume & Vibration).
- Trigger Do Not Disturb.
- Launch Camera & Take Photos (can be customised to take videos, portraits and selfies, etc).
- Control Torch.
- Start or End Audio Recording.
- To Use the Translation Feature.
- To Take a Screenshot.
- No Action (Pressing and Holding the Plus Key Won’t Perform Any Action).
How to customize ‘Plus Key’?
Customizing the Plus Key functions on OnePlus is fairly easy. All you need to do is go to “Settings“, then “Plus Key” and scroll right/left to choose the function you want to use and then tap on the “Set” button.
Additionally, if you want it to trigger the camera, you can choose it to open different modes. To do this, go to the Camera control section of the Plus Key, click on the small arrow and then choose the mode you want it to open whenever you use the Plus Key.
