How to Undock Copilot from Sidebar in Windows 11

Microsoft is ensuring at all costs that its users on the Windows 11 platform get access to the Microsoft Copilot AI assistant. At the same time, the assistant is already available to many users out there who can use it to perform certain tasks. However, Microsoft is also looking at ways how they can make it simple and easy to use the Copilot Assistant on the Windows PC.

For a long time, the Copilot Assistant when invoked would open up to the right-hand side of the screen. Microsoft has probably thought that it doesn’t seem like a good idea to simply leave the assistant stuck at the right-hand side of the screen because it’s not something everyone prefers to use any app or program.

So Microsoft has ensured that you can now dock and undock the Copilot sidebar on Windows 11 PCs. However, not everyone has got the feature yet.

If you were looking for a way to get the Copilot sidebar moveable to any part of the screen that you like, you can now do that thanks to the trusty ViveTool. Read on to know more.

A select number of users who are on the Canary and dev build of Windows 11 already have the option to dock and undock as well as move around the Copilot sidebar. But, if you do not have that feature yet, you can always force enable this feature on your Windows 11 PC.

Undock Copilot Sidebar on Windows 11

Now, let’s look at the steps you need to follow to undock the Copilot sidebar and move it around on your Windows 11 PC. First, we must download the ViveTool file and then run the command to enable this undockable Copilot sidebar. Let’s get started.

Step 1: Head over to this GitHub page if you don’t have the ViveTool file on your PC.

Step 2: Once you have downloaded the zip file for ViveTool, you need to extract the folder. Make sure to extract the folder at a location that you know at the back of your hand.

Step 3: Now, open up the Start Menu and search for the Command Prompt.

Step 4: Make sure to run Command Prompt using administrator privileges.

Step 5: With Command Prompt up and running, type in the following to set the directory.

Cd (file path of the ViveTool)

Step 6: Once the directory has been set, you now need to type in the command to enable the Undockable Copilot sidebar.

Type in vivetool /enable /id:47526251

Step 7: Once you hit the enter key, close all your programs and restart your Windows PC.

Thanks to @PhantomOfEarth on X (Twitter) for the ViveTool ID to forcefully enable the undock feature for the Copilot sidebar.

Once you’ve restarted your Windows PC, click on the Copilot icon present at the bottom right of the Taskbar.  With the Copilot sidebar open, click on the three dots menu and then make sure to uncheck the Dock option.

With this option unchecked, you can now move the Copilot sidebar to any part of the screen you like. You can even have it switched to cover either the left or right side of the screen.

This concludes the guide on how you can undock the Copilot sidebar and move it anywhere you like it on your screen. This undock feature will soon be coming to all Windows 11 PCs. But, if you simply are in a rush to get this feature, you can forcefully enable it with the ViveTool by following the steps mentioned above.
