Apple recently released iOS 15 and one of the big changes with iOS 15 is a totally redesigned Safari browser. This redesigned browser aims to make one-handed usability easier and offers more customizability.
Gone are the days of the boring grey screen in safari that shows some links you’ve saved. Now you can use your phone as a part of your personal aesthetic by giving the Safari app on your iPhone a personalized custom background. As for setting a custom iPhone Safari background, it is a very quick and easy process. You can use any of your own images or use an image from the new background wallpapers that Apple has included with iOS 15. Follow along to learn how to set a custom iPhone Safari background in iOS 15:
How to set custom background in Safari on iPhone
- Launch the Safari App on your iPhone.
- Tap on the two squares icon.
- Tap on the + icon in bottom corner, this will open a new safari page.
- Swipe down to the bottom of the page.
- Tap on Edit.
- Here are all start page customization options, by default, background image is turned off.
- Tap on the toggle next to Background Image.
- Tap on the + icon to use your own image or choose from one of the included background wallpapers.
You can also reorder the sections of the start page or turn them on/off to further customize your setup:

- Launch the Safari App on your iPhone.
- Tap on the two squares icon.
- Tap on the + icon in bottom corner, this will open a new safari page.
- Swipe down to the bottom of the page.
- Tap on Edit.
- You will now see options like Favorites, Frequently Visited, Shared with You, etc.
- Drag any of these sections from the three-lines icon next to their respective toggles and re-order them according to your liking.
Another big change Apple made to Safari with this update is relocating the search bar to the bottom. Now, the search bar is located at the bottom of the screen and just above the keyboard when you’re typing.
While this was originally meant to provide a better one-handed usage for users, many find it annoying and wish they could revert it back to the original layout.
To change it back to the original layout:
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Safari.
- Scroll down till you see Tabs.
- Tap on Single Tab.
This will change the layout in the Safari app on your iPhone so that the search bar is at the top of the page again.
If you ever decide to change it back and bring it to the bottom, all you need to do is follow the same steps and select “Tab Bar” instead.
