Alleged iPhone 17 Pro unit caught in public (first live sighting?)

Summarize This Article:

The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to launch later this year, most likely in September. As usual, leaks and rumors have already started surfacing, revealing key information about the upcoming device. Recently, a user claimed to have spotted the iPhone 17 Pro out in the wild.

An X user, skyfops, recently shared a post claiming to have spotted a test development unit of an iPhone, along with photos for proof. He later confirmed that the sighting took place at Union Square in San Francisco. Based on the images, the device appears to be the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro.

In the images shared by the tipster, a man can be seen holding two iPhones, one in Black and another in White Titanium. Although the photos are blurry and lack details, we can still see some details hinting that the black one could be the early unit/test unit of the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro.

The phone covered with a black case seems to have three camera lenses on one side, while the other side shows two circular cutouts, likely for the LED flash and LiDAR scanner. This layout aligns with earlier rumors suggesting that the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a long rectangular camera island, and the design seen in the images closely resembles those leaks.

Due to the blurry photo quality and the thick case used on the device, it’s difficult to tell whether the camera island is actually rectangular. The other iPhone the person is holding (appears to be iPhone 16 Pro) has a sticker on the back, which likely covers the code used by Apple for tracking internal iPhones used by employees.

Skyfops also mentioned that another person, wearing a cap and acting as security, was trying to hide the iPhone by blocking the view. You can see this in the second photo shared in the X post.

Quoting the post, Mark Gurman also mentioned ‘This looks legit.’ However, it’s unclear whether he meant it seriously or was being sarcastic. So just like all early leaks, take this sighting with a grain of salt.
