WhatsApp testing message translation feature in beta

The latest WhatsApp beta build, version 2.25.12.25 on Android, provides access to chat messages and channel updates translation. Currently, it is available to some beta users, but itโ€™s expected to expand to more users in the coming weeks.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the translation process happens entirely on the device, ensuring end-to-end encryption and maintaining message privacy. However, on-device processing also means that the translation may not perform as well as cloud-based translation services. But for most messages, it should work as intended.

The feature lets users choose whether they want to translate messages automatically or manually. Currently, it supports limited languages including Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian. In the Specific chat info page, users can download and select the language pack they want to translate. Users will not need an internet connection for translation once the language pack is downloaded.

Thereโ€™s also an option to select a special language pack that automatically detects the language. This is specifically useful for a group where users use different languages. The feature works on a per-chat basis, so you can choose any language for any chat based on the requirement.

If you want to translate the message manually, you can select the message and then tap on the three dots, and then choose to view the translated version.

WhatsApp is using the same technology for chat translation as its voice message transcription tool. It relies on a lightweight model, so it doesnโ€™t perform like cloud-based services, but it does reduce the effort required to translate a message.

If you want to delete the downloaded language packs, you can do that from the WhatsApp storage settings.

The feature is disabled by default. You can enable it on the Chat info page of every contact.
