watchOS 8.7.1 update fixes restart issue on Apple Watch Series 3

Last month, Apple rolled out watchOS 8.7 update for the Apple Watch. And now is the time for an incremental upgrade rolling with watchOS 8.7.1 version number, the new update is limited to the Apple Watch Series 3. The new upgrade is rolling along with the iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1 updates. Apple is working on the major watchOS 9 upgrade since June, it is coming next month, so we can not expect anything new with this upgrade, instead, it fixes known issues.

The latest software upgrade fixes the unexpected restart issues on the Apple Watch Series 3. Yes, the update is not available for the Apple Watch Series 4 and other models. The new software weighs only 116MB in size, confirmed by Aaron Zollo (@zollotech), if you own the series 3, then you can quickly install the new build on your watch.

As watchOS 8.7.1 comes along with iOS 15.6.1, you can expect security improvements and system enhancements with this upgrade. Apple kicks off the new build with the 19U67 firmware version. It is already available to many users running on watchOS 8.7 or older versions. Here’s how you can upgrade your watch to the latest software.

Install watchOS 8.7 update on Apple Watch

Make sure to update your iPhone to iOS 15.6.1, once updated, you can update your Apple Watch Series 3 to the watchOS 8.7.1. Here are the steps you can follow to update your Apple Watch to the new version.

  1. At first, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on My Watch.
  3. Then click on General > Software Update > Download and Install.
  4. Enter the password for confirmation.
  5. Tap on Agree to the terms and conditions.
  6. Once done, tap on install.
  7. Thatโ€™s it.
