Today, Apple has released iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1 for iPhone and Apple Watch. The new software upgrade restores the Blood Oxygen Monitoring system in the United States.
Apple is pushing the new watchOS upgrade to the eligible watch models with the 22U90 build number. As it is a big upgrade, it weighs around 460MB in download size. Talking about the eligibility, you can try the Blood Oxygen-feature on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Blood Oxygen Monitoring is coming back to U.S. Apple Watch models due to a “recent U.S. Customs ruling.”
Apple
Apple was forced to disable the Blood Oxygen Monitoring feature in the U.S. to comply with a United States International Trade Commission (ITC) import ban. The ITC found that Apple’s technology used features already patented by Masimo Corp.
Apple implemented a new workaround, available on watchOS 11.6.1 and iOS 18.6.1. Once you update your iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1, the Blood Oxygen app will measure the sensor data on the watch, but calculate it on iPhone; you can check out the results in the Respiratory section in the Health app.
Here’s the complete changelog released with the watchOS 11.6.1 update.
- This update provides a new Blood Oxygen experience for users in the United States with Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Measurements are calculated on iPhone and viewed in the Health app.
