iOS 18 is just around the corner and will be announced later today at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024). It is said to be one of the biggest upgrades for the iPhone, with Apple set to introduce several new AI features.
If you’re excited to try out the upcoming iOS 18 update on your iPhone, this guide is a must-read to help you prepare your device for the iOS 18 developer beta.
- Developer Beta Risks: Installing iOS 18 developer beta on your primary device is not recommended due to potential issues like poor battery life, app crashes, user interface glitches, and more.
- Keep a Backup: Backup your important data before opting for the developer beta.
- Storage Preparation: Make sure your iPhone has enough storage space, you can navigate to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to check the storage.
- Get the Beta Updates: To install the iOS 18 developer beta on your iPhone, you need to opt for beta updates in Software Updates.
Apple usually releases the first developer beta of the iOS upgrades on the same day as the announcement, so we can expect the iOS 18 developer beta today. While the public beta is expected to be released next month.
If you’re in haste and want to try out the all-new features of iOS 18, the only way to get it is by installing the developer beta. However, before doing so, you should prepare your device by following these steps:
Take a Backup
Developer Beta updates are purposely designed for testing purposes. I personally do not advise anyone to install the developer beta on your primary iPhone. If you have a secondary device, you can consider installing it there instead.
However, if you still want to give it a try, keep in mind that you can expect poor battery life, user interface glitches, app crashes, broken animations, and other minor issues.
You’re unlikely to face major issues after installing the developer build on your iPhone, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared for potential risks.
To minimize the potential risks, you can take a backup of your iPhone. Follow these steps to take a backup.
Step 1: Open Settings.
Step 2: Tap the Profile Photo or Your Name.
Step 3: Select iCloud, now scroll down, and Select iCloud Backup.
Step 4: Turn the toggle on for Back Up This iPhone and then Select Back Up Now option.
Free up Storage Space
iOS 18 is going to be the next major software upgrade for iPhone. Just like every major iOS release, the iOS 18 will require a big chunk of data for download and the same for installation. The installation might require around 15-25GB of storage space. Make sure your iPhone has enough free storage space to get things done smoothly.
If not, you’ll need to clean up your storage and meet the requirements. You can review the iPhone Storage by navigating to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
Here you can see which apps are using the most space. You can offload unused apps to save space or uninstall apps you’re no longer using. Additionally, you can clean up duplicate photos and review your videos to free up storage.
Eligibility Criteria
In terms of availability, iOS 18 is set to hit many iPhone devices. There’s a high chance that the update will be available to all iPhones running on iOS 17, which means, iPhone XR and newer models could get the update.
Apple usually provides five years of iOS upgrades to the iPhones, it recently, confirmed the same for iPhone 15. However, sometimes, Apple extends the software by a year or so, if it happens this time, then the update will also be available for iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max; and newer models.
Install the Developer Beta
Apple will initially release the update to developers for testing purposes, if you want to install it on your iPhone, then you need to opt-in to the beta program.
Note: Make sure to sign in with your Apple ID to install the beta updates on your iPhone.
It’s free! Anyone can opt for developer or public beta updates on iPhone and other Apple Devices. Now when iOS 18 dev beta is out, you can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Select iOS 18 Developer beta option. That’s it.
Once you go back to the Software Updates, you will see the iOS 18 developer beta on your screen, simply select the install option. It will take some time to download and install. Make sure your iPhone is charged at least 50%.
After a successful reboot, you can start using the new features.
