OnePlus 2.0 – Everything you need to know!

The recent announcement from Pete Lau, representing OnePlus and Oppo now clarifies their strategy for the future. Pete Lau shared about the upcoming merger of ColorOS and OxygenOS which will benefit Oppo and OnePlus users. Earlier this year, they made it official that the product and R&D teams of Oppo and OnePlus are now working together. And later they announced the merger of ColorOS and OxygenOS. And now Pete Lau himself reveals the next step of the OnePlus journey. Here you will know everything about the OnePlus 2.0.

If you are confused with the name OnePlus 2.0, it’s just to represent the next phase or the next OnePlus journey. Basically, the OnePlus 2.0 journey will start next year when we are going to see the merger of OxygenOS and ColorOS.

Pete Lau the founder of OnePlus announced this news on the OnePlus forum. And seeing the reaction of OnePlus users, it looks like some users are in favor of this merger, whereas some users don’t like this move from OnePlus. But the step has been taken already and we can only judge after witnessing the results.

Now coming to what Pete Lau has announced, he mentioned the betterment of camera experience and the unified operating system. They will continue working on the camera improvement. Of Course, they will also improve other specs, but it seems their main focus will be the camera improvement and the operating system. Pete Lau also explained the Product Strategy for the next phase OnePlus 2.0.

Unified Global Operating System

Further saying on the future of OxygenOS, he mentioned that codebase integration of OxygenOS 12 and ColorOS 12 is happening. They have integrated the ColorOS and OxygenOS teams to work on the unified and upgraded global operating system whose title will be announced later. We will let you know once they announce their new title for the upcoming integrated operating system which will be a result of the OxygenOS and ColorOS merger. Or they will keep one of the titles either OxygenOS or ColorOS.

Pete Lau also announced that Gary C who is Head of OxygenOS will also lead the new Unified and Upgraded operating system. So if you are an OxygenOS fan, this will be great news for you as you can expect the new OS to be more like the OxygenOS.

Here is an excerpt from the official statement that Pete Lau shared in the forum.

‘By combining our software resources to focus on one unified and upgraded operating system for both OnePlus and OPPO devices globally, we will combine the strengths from both into one even more powerful OS: the fast and smooth, burdenless experience of OxygenOS, and the stability and rich features of ColorOS.’

And he also ensured that the new OS will keep the DNA of OxygenOS. The new Unified and Upgraded OS will keep the best features from both OxygenOS and ColorOS. As per the OnePlus, the new OS is to be Fast and Smooth, Reliable, Smart and Feature-rich, Clean and Lightweight. Now that you know the ColorOS and OxygenOS merging, you will have the question of when it is coming to the public.

When is the Unified Operating System coming?

This is the most common question everyone has. And luckily Pete Lau has also mentioned the availability of the integrated operating system to the public. As they have just started working on the new unified operating system, there is no doubt that it is not coming this year.

They will launch their new Unified Operating System in 2022 along with their flagship phones, maybe the OnePlus 10 series. And then it will be available to the public with the Android 13 starting Q4 2022. The first build will be based on Android 13, and so only eligible OnePlus devices will get the new OS. Here’s an official announcement from Pete Lau:

‘In terms of timeline, for global OnePlus devices, we will first introduce the integrated OS with the launch of our next flagship series in 2022. The integration will be fully completed together with the next major Android update in 2022. We will share more details about when specific devices will receive the new OS at a later date.’

Will OnePlus allow unlocking bootloader after the new OS?

For users who are in custom development, OnePlus phones are great for testing and other tasks as the OEM allows unlocking bootloader. On the other hand, Oppo does not allow unlocking bootloader. And so it raises a valid question: will they let users unlock bootloader with the new Unified OS.

Yes, OnePlus users will be able to unlock bootloader. This is officially stated by Pete Lau, so you don’t have to worry about it. It will be great if Oppo also starts allowing unlocking bootloader with the new OS.

Although there is time for the release of a new unified OS, we may see some of the ColorOS features coming to OxygenOS and vice versa. OnePlus already adapted the interface of the ColorOS stock camera app. OxygenOS 12 is also around the corner and ColorOS 12 is also announced. We will keep you updated with the upcoming news of ColorOS 12 and OxygenOS 12 on their specific tracker page.
