OnePlus’ Infamous Motherboard Dead Issue is Back to the OnePlus 9 and 10 Series

The OnePlus 6 and 7 series were famous for having the motherboard failure issue. A lot of users reported that their device went dead and started displaying the Qualcomm Crashdump Mode; and when they took the device to the service center, they told them to get the motherboard replaced as the only solution to it.

But seems like the infamous issue is now back with the OnePlus 9 and 10 series devices. A lot of users, including myself, have faced it. This is probably the same issue that was reported with the 6 and 7 series devices. The devices are getting dead suddenly and sometimes, it boots to Qualcomm Crash Dump mode.

OnePlus 9 and 10 Series Facing a Widespread Motherboard Failure

A bunch of users on the OnePlus Community and Twitter have reported their 9 and 10 series devices are going dead all of a sudden. The OnePlus 10 Pro and 9 Pro are the most affected models. Even I have faced this issue with my OnePlus 9 Pro. Some users even tried visiting the official service center, however, the response they received from OnePlus was unsatisfactory.

Some users were told to get their motherboard replaced, which costs as much as 45% of the total cost of the device. Some users were told to get a new device instead and I’m one of them. It’s been nearly confirmed that it’s a widespread issue and you can refer to the following source from X (Twitter) to know more about the affected users:

As of right now, there has been no response from the brand yet. The users are simply living in the hope of getting a response from the brand. OnePlus is known for offering one of the best after-sales services, however, their response to this particular issue is peculiar. The brand has not even acknowledged the issue yet, let alone providing the solution.

What exactly is the reason behind this widespread motherboard failure?

There is no confirmed reason behind this issue yet. However, there is a strong chance that the recent SOTA update caused this. SOTA is a universal update meant for OnePlus devices to improve and update the system apps and their performance. The last SOTA update rolled out for the devices was U120P02(BRB1EX01).

Some users who have faced the motherboard failure issue have reported that they recently updated to this SOTA version. Even I myself faced a weird battery-related error moment after updating the OnePlus 9 Pro.

The device wasn’t getting charged, neither was it displaying an accurate battery percentage. Whenever I was trying to connect the charger, I was getting a system error that said there was a battery connection error and I needed to visit the service center. It however got fixed automatically after a few minutes.

This battery issue was enough for me to raise my eyebrows over the update and then after a few days, the OnePlus 9 Pro died randomly while using the phone. Other users have also reported similar instances.

What could be the possible solution to this?

Since this is the brand’s fault and not the users, I expect OnePlus to act responsibly and provide an optimal solution to the affected users. Both the OnePlus 9 Pro and 10 Pro (the most affected devices) are flagship devices and they are not too old either and they do not deserve to be treated this way.

We request OnePlus to acknowledge the issue and provide free repairs to the user. If a free repair is not possible, then please come up with some other alternative solutions to it; just like they did in the case of the green line issue. This will help the user to gain confidence back in the brand.
