Android 12 is around the corner and already set for the last public beta at least per the official roadmap. And it means it’s time for other OEMs to start gearing for the next major Android 12 update. Some OEMs partnered with Google to push Android 12 developer preview for their top flagship phone. Sony did not participate in the early Android 12, but eventually, the OEM will start the Android 12 rollout later this year. Google announced the Android 12 update in the Google I/O event which comes with some major changes especially the whole new Material You UI. It marks one of the biggest UI updates in years. We know Sony Xperia phones run on near stock Android experience so it would be interesting to see which Android 12 makes it to Sony phones.

Sony may not be promising when it comes to Android updates, but they roll out updates in time for eligible devices. There was a time when Sony Xperia phones were dominating, but time changes and for Sony, it was not in their favor. Now only a few devices are released in one year, but this means the opportunity for better software management from the company. But till now the OEM fails to deliver up to users expectations when it comes to major Android updates.

Sony Xperia Phones eligible for Android 12

Sony gives the official statement for every Android update and for every Xperia phone. Talking about the recent announcement from Sony is that Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III will be eligible for two major Android updates. Yes, this claim surely gives an idea about these two phones coming in September with Android 11 out of the box.

List of Xperia Phones eligible for Android 12:

  • Sony Xperia 1 III
  • Sony Xperia 5 III
  • Sony Xperia 10 III
  • Sony Xperia 1 II
  • Sony Xperia 5 II

Yes, the list of Android 12 eligible Xperia phones is disappointing. Only five Xperia phones will get the Android 12 update. Of course, the Xperia phones releasing after Xperia 1III will also be eligible for Android 12.

This is unfortunate that Sony will launch Xperia 1 Mark III and Sony Xperia 5 Mark III with Android 11 and they will count Android 12 as the first major update. Yes, Sony recently clarified that Sony Xperia 1 III and Sony Xperia 5 III will get two major updates which mean up to Android 13. Also, Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II are eligible for three major updates. And as both phones were released earlier with Android 10, both phones will receive updates till Android 13.

The list of Sony Xperia phones eligible for Android 12 is almost correct as Sony officially stated an update policy for these five Xperia phones. If your expectations are low from Sony, then you will be happy with the update policy but if you compare with other OEMs like Samsung OnePlus, you will be disappointed.
