Apple releases iOS 15.6.1 update with bug fixes and security improvements

iOS 15.6.1 is the latest update, that iPhone users can install on their phones. The new update comes one month after the public release of iOS 15.6. There’s a new iPadOS 15.6.1 software rolling to the iPads. As we’re close to the release of iOS 16, we cannot expect anything new in this upgrade, instead, it is an important security upgrade rolling to the eligible iPhones. Apple seeds the new iOS build to the iPhone with 19G82 firmware version. Yes, it is a small upgrade that weighs approx. 284MB in size. You can quickly install it on your iPhone 6s and newer model. Along with iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1, there’s a new update for Mac and Apple Watch – macOS 12.5.1 and watchOS 8.7.1.

Apple confirms the new update rolling with bug fixes and security improvements. The important security update brings fixes to the kernel and WebKit vulnerabilities that could lead to arbitrary code execution. Here are more details on the fixes.


  • Kernel

Available for: iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation)

Impact: An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.

CVE-2022-32894: an anonymous researcher

  • WebKit

Available for: iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation)

Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

If your iPhone is running on the iOS 15.6 or older version, then you can quickly update your device to the newer version. You can check for the new software update by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
