Better late than never: After 14 years since its launch, the iPad has finally received a Calculator app with iPadOS 18. At first glance, the app looks very similar to the Calculator app available on iPhone; however, it offers significantly more functionality.

With the Apple Pencil, you can now write down math problems and equations, and the app will automatically solve them. Apple is branding this feature as “Math Notes.”  The new feature can also be accessed in the Notes and Freeform.

The Calculator app offers four screens โ€“ Basic, Scientific, Math Notes, and Convert. The Basic screen functions as a simple calculator for everyday use. The Scientific screen includes advanced mathematical functions.

The Math Notes screen allows users to handwrite math problems and receive instant solutions. The Convert screen offers unit conversions for various categories, including angle, area, currency, data, energy, and more.

Math Notes calculator allows iPhone and iPad users to type or handwrite mathematical expressions or equations and receive instant responses. The feature goes beyond basic calculations, you can write out scientific calculations or complex expressions. It provides immediate answers as soon as the equal sign is written.

Additionally, Math Notes can generate graphs, you can write an equation and insert a graph with just one tap. You can even add multiple equations on the same graph or using the slider function to adjust the values. The best thing is, that you can do real-time adjustments and get updated responses instantly.

How to Use Math Notes on iPhone and iPad

Math Notes feature is available on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, which are currently in beta for testing purposes. This year’s iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 builds are stable enough for regular use; I have been using the beta on my iPhone and iPad without encountering any major bugs. Apple will release the public beta which is expected to be more stable next month.

Now if you want to try out the new Math Notes feature, make sure your iPhone or iPad is running on the iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 beta. If you are already on the beta, follow these steps to use the Math Notes feature.

How to Use Math Notes on iPad

Step 1: Open the Calculator app from the App Library.

Step 2: Press the Calculator icon from the bottom left corner and select Math Notes option.

Step 3: Now pull off the Apple Pencil Pro (or older model) or simply handwrite any equation with your finger.

Step 4: As soon as you write equal sign, the app will instantly do the math for you and display the answer in your Note.

How to Use Math Notes on iPad

If you use the Math Notes screen in the calculator app, it will automatically record and save your calculation history.

Apart from the Calculatorโ€™s Math Notes functionality, you can also use the Notes app or Freeform to perform calculations. Simply create a new note, select the drawing tools, and write any equation with your finger and get things done. If you’re compiling a list of expenses and need to calculate the total, write down all the expenses and draw a line to get the results.
