How to Save Photos and Videos from iMessage to Camera Roll

Pictures received in messages using third-party apps such as WhatsApp will be saved automatically to your iPhone’s photo collection. But that’s not the case with the iMessage app on iPhone. With iMessage, iOS’s equivalent to Android’s native text messaging application, you have to save each picture individually.

This default feature may help save space in your iPhone’s memory, but it also means you have to manually save pictures you want to have on your iPhone.

Today, we will show you how to save photos and videos from iMessage to Camera Roll on iPhone and iPad.

On most iPhones, the iMessage app packs many photos and videos shared by friends and family. We usually leave our iMessage photos and videos in their respective threads, thinking we would scroll up and show them to someone when the time comes.

Unlike WhatsApp, the iMessage on iOS does not automatically save photos to the photo library. This can be annoying especially if you might want to look at these images again. It requires a lot of time to find a particular image that you want. You can just save yourself some trouble by saving iMessage photos and videos to Camera Roll so that they are safe and easier for you to access when the time comes. It’s rather a shame to leave them locked away in the iMessage on iPhone, never to see the light of day again.

Here we will show you how you can save videos and images straight to the Photos app on your iPhone and iPad. So, you can view them later or protect them as a memory.

Steps to Save Photos from iMessage to Camera Roll

Here’s what to do if you would like to save photos or videos from your iMessage to your Photos library on your iPhone.

The whole thing is actually quite easy. Pick up your iPhone or iPad and follow through.

  1. Launch the iMessage app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Now open the conversation that contains images or videos you want to save to the Camera Roll.
  3. Scroll through messages and find the image or video.
  4. Press and hold on to the photo/video that you want to save.

  5. You will see a pop-up of options including Copy and Save.
  6. Tap on Save and it will get saved in the Camera Roll.
  7. That’s it.

I know, this is so easy, but if you don’t know this is how it works. Now you can check the images or videos in your iPhone’s Camera Roll.

This is an easy method if you want to save recent images and videos to camera Roll from iMessage. But what if you want to save old images or videos. Well in that case you can follow the next method.

How to save older Photos from iMessage to Camera Roll

This is a neat place to browse all the pictures that you have sent to each other. If the photos/videos are from a while ago, you would not want to scroll back through weeks or months of messages. In that case, go through these steps.

  1. Open iMessage on your iPhone and then open the conversation from which you want to save the media file to Camera Roll.
  2. Tap on the Contact name at the top.

The photo/video will now be available in your Photos app. If it is not visible in the library, you might want to check the Recents album in your Photos app if you do not see it right away. The older timestamp of the image or video might prevent it from showing up in chronological order. To do this, just navigate to Albums > Recents.

You can do this for all the photos and videos you may have. Also, if you have Messages in iCloud enabled then it means that your message threads are backed up and synced across all your Apple devices, and you won’t lose your photos and videos as long as you don’t delete the entire thread manually.

While a lot of veteran iPhone and iPad users might find this tutorial extremely basic, but if you are just starting out with iMessage and Apple’s ecosystem in general, then you will find this information extremely useful. So that’s all on how to save photos from iMessage to Camera Roll.
