How to Root Samsung S9/S9 Plus [Snapdragon & Exynos]

Samsung S9 and S9+ are the latest Galaxy S series phones, but it has been a long time since their launch. So if you want to root and try new things on the phone here is how to root Samsung S9 and S9 plus. The mentioned methods will work on both Snapdragon and Exynos powered devices.

We have seen that Samsung launches its devices with two different chipsets, mainly in S7, S8, S8+, S9, and S9+. Where Exynos powered, devices are available globally, but the Snapdragon powered devices are only available in few selected countries such as USA, Canada, & China. So if you want to root your Samsung device then first make sure that the phone you are using is running on which chipset. Because the rooting method is different for different chipsets used in devices. But there is also a common method to root Samsung S9/S9+ Snapdragon or Exynos.how to root samsung s9

These things should be done carefully; otherwise you may end up bricking your device which no one wants. And then further you have to unbrick the device first to use it. So make sure to properly go through the steps to root Samsung S9 or S9+.

How to Root Samsung S9 and S9 Plus

First, we will let you know the common method that can be used to root Samsung S9 Exynos as well as Snapdragon, which is using Magisk. This method is usually referred for all the Android devices because of many reasons. Like once you have followed this method, then you can directly install anything such custom ROMs, firmware or any other zip file. Let’s begin with the first method on how to root Samsung S9 and S9 Plus.

Instructions:

Note: Remember that enabling bootloader or OEM unlock is different for Snapdragon device. The guide is available just below.

Guide: Install CROM Service on your phone from the Galaxy App store. And then enable OEM Unlock in Developer option in S9/S9+ Snapdragon version.

Make sure that you have completed all the task that are mentioned in Instructions. These instructions are compulsory; otherwise, you can brick your device.

Now download the TWRP file for your particular devices.

TWRP for Samsung S9/S9+ with Exynos chipset is official build whereas TWRP for Samsung S9/S9+ with Snapdragon is the unofficial build. Check out below how to install TWRP recovery on Samsung S9 and S9 Plus.

Install TWRP in Samsung S9 and S9 Plus

  • First Download Odin flash tool on your PC.
  • Open Odin on PC and locate the TWRP file in ‘AP’ tab.how to root samsung s9
  • Turn off the phone and then boot into download mode (press & hold Bixby+Vol down+Power button). Press Vol Up if it gives warning.
  • Connect the phone with the laptop. And under options uncheck ‘Auto-reboot‘ & ‘F.Reset Time‘ option.
  • Click on start to install the TWRP recovery.
  • Then Boot the device into Recovery mode (press & hold Bixby+Vol Up+Power). Release the power button 1 second later after Samsung Icon appears.
  • Do not reboot into the system until you install the Magisk otherwise, you will have to wait for 7 days to repeat the process, and you can also lose your phone data.
  • In TWRP go to Keep Read Only > wipe > Format data > type ‘yes’ and press enter. This will erase everything from your phone except the external storage.how to root samsung s9
  • After formatting data go back to TWRP home and go to Reboot > Recovery > Do not install.

Now move to particular section according to your device chipset (Exynos or Snapdragon).

How to Root Samsung S9 and S9 Plus (Exynos)

  1. When the phone reboot into TWRP from the last step. Then click on ‘keep read-only’.
  2. Connect your phone with PC to copy downloaded files (Magisk, RMM State Bypass, No Varity Opt Encrypt) to your phone memory, or you can use microSD card.
  3. Then go to ‘Install’ in TWRP and select ‘No Verity Opt Encrypt’ and swipe to flash it.
  4. Again go to TWRP home and go to reboot > recovery > Do not install.
  5. After rebooting again into recovery, go to ‘install’ and select ‘RMM State Bypass’ and swipe to install.
  6. Click on the Back button and this time select ‘Magisk’ and swipe to install.
  7. After flashing Magisk click on Reboot system > Do not Install.
  8. The phone will now reboot it will take time for the first time so wait. It may also reboot twice or thrice so do not worry in that case.
  9. Now you can set up your device and copy the backup from the backup source.
  10. You have successfully rooted Samsung S9 or S9+ phone.

How to Root Samsung S9 & S9 Plus (Snapdragon)

All the steps are the same for Snapdragon as Exynos, but the procedure to enable OEM unlocking is different. So if you have installed the TWRP recovery, then you are good to follow the same procedure as Exynos.

  1. When the phone reboot into TWRP. Then click on ‘keep read-only’.
  2. Connect your phone with PC to copy downloaded files (Magisk, RMM State Bypass, No Varity Opt Encrypt) to your phone memory, or you can use microSD card.

    ive been looking for a root ut have not been able to find and now i see this that was posted a year ago how could of missed?

    • Hi Roy,
      If you have unlocked bootloader on your S9+ (SM-G965) then you can root without any problem. Remember it will work for S9+ SM-G965 model. In case if you have different model but the bootloader is unlocked then use the patched boot image to root your phone.

    S9+ SM-G965U verizon variant.
    please let me know when u can. i am also curious what u mean by 7 day wait ?

    • Hi Roy,
      If you have Verizon variant then i don’t think you will be able to unlock the bootloader. Which means you can not root your phone.
      But you can still try, reach out to Verizon and tell them that you have to visit another country and so you want to unlock the bootloader. It may work and if it worked then you can follow the guide to root your phone.
