When it comes to previous generation gaming consoles, the PS4 from Sony is one of the best ones out there. Of course, it’s been almost 8 years since its launch but is still loved by console gamers all over to date. Like all electronic gadgets out there, there is the point in time where you might end up with some issues. The same can be said for the PS4 controller. You might have noticed that sometimes the PS4 controller shows a blinking white light and you can’t seem to figure out what it’s trying to tell you. This is a guide that will explain the PS4 blinking white light, what it means and what is to be done in such a situation.
Types of light indicators on the Dual Shock 4 PS4 Controller
The light bar in the PS4 controller is used to indicate various things. If you’ve got 4 friends connected to your PS4, each controller has its own color for example Blue would mean player 1, Red would mean player 2, Green would be player 3 and pink would be player 4. If you spot a flashing orange light, that would mean the controller is in the rest mode or sleep mode. And now the blinking White light, what does it indicate? Well, it could indicate two things, the battery is getting weak and needs to be charged and two, the controller is not able to connect to the PS4. Both of these issues can be fixed easily without the need of disassembling the device.
Fix – PS4 Blinking White Light Issue
Check your controller’s USB power cable
Cables are prone to wear and tear after a certain period of time. With that being said, it’s best to check if your cable has frayed at the ends or in the middle. If you’ve got a damaged cable, it could be the reason why the white light shows up as the controller isn’t receiving any charge. When you get a new power cable for the controller, plug it into the PS4 and the controller and check the light bar. When the light bar turns blue or orange, it indicates that the cable is working perfectly and the controller is getting charged as well.
Restart the PS4
One of the most go-to methods to fix if anything wrong happens. Usually works most of the time for various electronic gadgets all the time.
- Turn the PlayStation 4 off by holding the power button pressed for around 30 seconds
- Unplug the power cord from the rear of the PS4 or you could simply remove the power plug from the sockets.
- Wait for a few minutes. 3 minutes or so should be quite fine.
- Reconnect the power cables to the PS4 and fire up the PS4.
- Connect the controller to the PS4 via the USB cables.
- Press the PlayStation button on the controller to power it on.
- If you see a blue light on the light bar, that means the issue has been fixed and it was just a small temporary bug that occurred.
Resetting the controller
The PS4 controller also receives its own software updates for better functioning. Sometimes the update might even trigger a bug which might result in the white blinking light on the PS4 controller. This can be fixed by resetting the controller. Let’s see how to reset a PS4 controller.
- Get yourself a safety pin. A sim card ejector tool will also do the trick.
- Now, look at the rear of the controller. Look at the top right screw. You’ll see a reset button.
- Now with your safety pin or sim ejector tool, press the reset button for about 5 to 6 seconds.
- Connect the controller to the PS4 via the USB cables.
- Press the PlayStation button on the controller to power it on.
- If the light bar shows blue light, this could mean that the issue has been fixed and it was just a temporary bug.
Rebooting the PS4 in Safe Mode
Even if the above methods didn’t help in resolving the white blinking light on the PS4, the only way to fix this is to rebuild the database. Rebuilding your database basically means re-organizing the PS4’s Har drive. It means clearing out the old and unwanted corrupted files which can never be read by the PS4. Rebuilding the database also helps in creating spaces and helps to make the PS4 boot quicker. Rebuilding your database will not erase any personal data and game files.
- Turn your PS4 off. Do not unplug it.
- Press and hold the power button. Keep pressing it till you hear two beeps in an interval of 7 seconds.
- Now connect the controller to the PS4 with the USB cables.
- Now, press the PlayStation button in the controller to power it on.
- And that’s how you fix the white blinking light on the PS4 controller. These steps are easy to follow and don’t require your to do anything major.
Conclusion
If at all you are unable to fix the PS4 white blinking light then your best bet is to take it to the authorized centers of Sony in case your controller is still under warranty. If your controller is out of warranty and the repairs might not be justified then you could always go ahead and buy a newer controller. Always remember to not disassemble the controller by yourself.
