The ability to drag and drop files to be opened by the running app has been omitted for some reason. Just like the Start Button and the Start Menu that continues to exist, users also feel that the drag and drop files to the taskbar feature should have not been removed. It has always been a handy feature and continues to do. However, Microsoft has decided to bring the feature back and will be rolling it out first to insiders by the end of the year and later to the general public by early next year. So, for the time being, there are a few workarounds that can be used to imitate the drag and drop files to the taskbar on Windows 11.

The community as always is quick to come out with a solution to bring this important feature back until Microsoft rolls it out as an update. Anyways, there are two simple and easy ways you can follow to bring this handy feature back. Let’s take a look.

Method 1 –

The first method is by using a simple tool that is available on GitHub. Titled Windows11DragAndDropToTaskbarFix, this tool helps to bring the useful feature back to Windows 11. The setup to enable this feature is pretty simple. Follow the steps below.

  1. First of all, you will need to head over to this GitHub page to download the tool.

Method 2

The second method is also another easy way to get this feature enabled. This requires you to download an app from the Microsoft Store. So, if you do not have a Microsoft account signed in to your system, it is time you do so as the Store requires you to have a Microsoft Account to download apps and even post reviews.

  1. Open up the Microsoft Store and head over to the search box that is in the middle at the top of the screen.
  2. Type in drag and drop. Hit the enter key to search the app.
  3. From the results, you will see the first app that says Drag and Drop Toolbar for Windows 11. Click on it.

  5. The app weighs just 1.1 MB. So, it should be a quick download.
  6. Once downloaded, click on the Open button in Microsoft Store.
  7. The moment you open the app you will receive a notification stating that the app has been set to run during Windows startup.
  8. Also, you will see a little tray at the top of your screen.
  9. To drag and drop files to whatever program is running, simply drag the file over to the top and hover over the panel. You can simply then drop the file over the open program and you are good to go.
