WhatsApp introduced the group chat feature in 2011. Since then, it has been widely used among users for staying connected with friends, family, and colleagues. Groups on WhatsApp make it easy for users to send group messages, exchange photos, and communicate about their workplace, school, or community.
While all of this is great, sometimes we need to delete a WhatsApp group. Whether the group is no longer active, you don’t want to be a part of it, the purpose of creating it has been completed, or others, deleting a group on WhatsApp is very easy, either as an admin or participant. Read on to learn the steps to do this.
Before we head over to the actual steps, we suggest you check if you are a group admin or just a participant. To check this, open the group and click on the group name at the top, then scroll down to the list of members and see if the group admin is mentioned next to your name or not.
If yes, it means you are the group’s admin and have the right to delete the group for everyone. On the other hand, if you are just a member of the group, you can’t delete a group on WhatsApp for everyone, but you can just exit the group and delete chats.
How to Delete a WhatsApp Group as an Admin
As mentioned above in the article, if you have created a WhatsApp group or have an admin, you can easily delete the group completely. However, you first need to manually remove each member before deleting it completely. If you exit a group without removing other participants, WhatsApp will automatically assign a member as a group admin if you were the only admin in the group. Here’s how you can do this:
Step 1: Open the WhatsApp on your device.
Step 2: Head over to the group and tap on the group name at the top.
Step 3: Scroll down to the Participants or Members section.
Step 4: Tap on the members one by one and choose Remove from the context menu that appears.
Step 5: After removing all the participants from the group, click on Exit Group.
Step 6: Confirm the action by tapping Exit Group.
Step 7: A message will then appear that you’re no longer a participant in this group. Now, click on Delete Group at the bottom.
Step 8: Finally, confirm it by tapping Delete Group.
How to Delete a WhatsApp Group as a Participant
If you are a participant or member of a group and want to delete it, you can also do it. But first, you will have to exit the group. Note that exiting a WhatsApp group means you can’t see the newer messages. Here’s how you can do this:
Step 1: Open the WhatsApp on your phone.
Step 2: Head over to the group and click on the group name at the top.
Step 3: Scroll down to the bottom and tap Exit Group.
Step 4: Confirm the action by tapping Exit Group.
Step 5: Long-press on the group from the chat section. Tap on the three-dot icon, then choose Delete Group.
As soon as you do, you will not see the group in your chat list.
So, these are the steps through which you can delete a group on WhatsApp, either as an admin or a participant. If you use WhatsApp on the web, the process is very similar. If the purpose of deleting a WhatsApp group is just to clear the previous chat, then you can do it without leaving the group by clearing the chat. To do this, open the group, tap on the group name then choose Clear Chat, which you will find at the bottom of the screen.
Note that clearing chat or deleting a group as a participant does not mean that your message will also be deleted from other participants in the WhatsApp group, as they can still view it.
