How to Create a Contact Group on iPhone [3 Easy Methods]

Want to send a party invite message or mail to multiple contacts frequently? But tired of sending the same message again and again. Then, making a contact group will make things easier. Creating a group of contacts is the best way to send a message to many users on iPhone. Yes, it is possible to send a group message from an iPhone, but it’s not as easy as it seems to be, at least for iOS 15 or older iPhones. If your iPhone is running on iOS 16 or newer, then you can easily create a group on iPhone without installing any app or logging into iCloud on a PC. Apple does not allow making contact groups yet, but the feature is coming in iOS 16. If your iPhone is running on an older version of iOS, here are some third-party apps you can use to make a group. Those not prefer installing third-party apps can use the official iCloud method to make a group.

There are three easy ways, let’s take a look at the official iPhone method first that requires your iPhone to run on iOS 16 or newer.

How to Create a Group in Contacts on iPhone (Official Method – iOS 16)

Apple finally brings a much-needed group managing feature to the iPhone with iOS 16. I found this feature while testing the iOS 16 beta on my iPhone 12 and it works similarly to the Contacts on iCloud. Here’s how you can make a group on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Phone app on your iPhone.
  2. Now tap Contacts.
  3. Next, tap the Lists option at the top left corner.

  4. Here you will be able to see all the groups on your iCloud.
  5. Tap on Add List button at the top right corner.

  6. Give a Name to your Group.

Note: These groups are not compatible with the iMessage or Messages app on iPhone. You can send a email message to the group.

Add Contacts to Group on iPhone

  1. With the Lists page opened in the Contacts app on iPhone.
  2. Tap on the group name.
  3. Now tap Add Contacts option or the + icon at the top right corner.

Remove Contacts from Group on iPhone

  1. Open the Contact Group.
  2. Now swipe the contact from the right side.
  3. You will see the remove option, tap on it.

  4. You can also tap and hold on a contact to remove it from a group.
  5. That’s it.

Send a Mail to Members in Contacts Group

  1. With the Group screen opened on iPhone.
  2. Tap on the Mail icon at the top right side.
  3. It will automatically open the Mail app on your iPhone with a new draft.

  5. That’s it.

This is one of the easiest ways to create a group on iPhone for users running on iOS 16 or newer versions. If your iPhone does not support iOS 16, then you can sideload a third-party app, here are the steps.

How to Create a Contacts Group on iPhone using Apps

There are many apps available on the App Store that allows you to create a group directly from your iPhone. In case you don’t have access to your computer, then you can use the below-listed apps and make a contact group.

In this article, I am covering the steps of creating a group on the two popular apps – Groups and Contact Groups. Let’s dive into the steps.

Create a Group on iPhone using Contact Groups app

  1. First things first, download the Contact Groups app on your iPhone.
  2. Open the app, then grant access to contacts.
  3. Now tap on the + icon on the top right corner.

  4. Type a name for your Group.
  5. Now tap Add contacts button to add contacts to your group.

  6. Select the contacts you want to add to the group.
  7. Tap Save.

  8. Select the Group to see the group details, send a text message/email, or share the group.

Create a Group on iPhone using Groups app

  1. First, install the Groups app on your iPhone.
  2. Open the app, then grant contacts access.
  3. Once done, a pop-up will open for newsletter subscriptions which you can skip.
  4. Now go back to the All Contacts screen.
  5. Select the contacts you want to add to your group.

If you want to create a group on your iPhone, then you can follow any of the above-listed methods. However, if you don’t want to install a third-party app on your device, then you can follow the iCloud method.

How to Create a Contacts Group on iPhone using iCloud

iCloud is the only official method that sports managing contact groups. Yes, whether you own an iPhone or an iPad, you can easily manage the contacts on iCloud, all you need to do is, go to iCloud.com, then follow the below steps.

  1. Open the web browser on your PC, then go to iCloud.com
  2. Now sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. Tap on Contacts.

  4. On the next screen, tap the + icon at the bottom left corner.

  5. Next, tap on the New Group option, and give a name to your group.

Now your contact group is ready, but it is empty yet, you can add any contacts you want to the group. Here’s how you can add contacts to the group on iCloud.

Add Contacts to Group on iCloud

  1. With the Contacts tab opened on iCloud.
  2. Go to the All Contacts section.
  3. Choose the Contacts you want to add to the Group, you can press the Control key on Windows or Command key on Mac to select multiple contacts. Then, drag the selected contacts and drop them inside the Group.

In case you want to remove any contact from the group, then you can do it easily in the Contacts app on iPhone as well as on the iCloud website.

  1. Select the Group on iCloud.
  2. Now choose the contact you want to remove from the group.
  3. Next, Click on the gear icon at the left bottom corner. Then, click Delete.

These simple ways help you manage contact groups on iCloud, now if you want to mail to the group, then you can open the group on your iPhone and then send a mail. Or you can simply open the Mail app on your iPhone, then in the “To” section, select the group, and that’s it.
