How to Enter Download Mode & Unlock Bootloader on Galaxy M40

Galaxy M40 Unlock Bootloader

Samsung Galaxy M40 is the latest phone in the Galaxy M series and it comes with punch hole display. And more importantly it is a budget phone, it means many users could now buy a phone with punch hole display. Not only the appearance but also the specifications are great on Galaxy M40. And you can boost the performance by rooting the phone and performing customizations which gives full control of the phone to the user. But to root or modify your phone first you need to learn how to boot Galaxy M40 into download mode and how to unlock bootloader on Galaxy M40.

This is a basic guide which every M40 users should know because it is going to help at some point in the future. Like if you brick your phone then you don’t need to go the service center if you can fix it by yourself. Also, you don’t need for OTA updates if you have the update file you can manually update your phone. Let’s get to the guide one by one.

How to Enter Download Mode on Galaxy M40

To customize or write anything on the phone from PC, we need to boot Galaxy M40 to Download Mode. Download mode is also known as Fastboot mode on some phones. The phone needs to be in any of these modes to write anything from any tool or command window. You can boot Galaxy M40 to download mode with different methods and here we are going to share two different methods.

Method 1:

  • Release the buttons when you see the Samsung Logo.
  • A warning screen will appear, now press Volume Up button once.
  • Now the Galaxy M40 will boot to Download Mode.

Method 2:

  • Power off your Galaxy M40.
  • Press & hold Volume Up + Power button together. Galaxy M40 Download Mode
  • Release the buttons when the Samsung logo appears.
  • The phone will now boot to recovery mode, press volume buttons to navigate. Navigate to ‘Reboot to bootloader’.
  • Once the blue line is on ‘Reboot to bootloader’ press Power button to select it. Galaxy M40 Download Mode
  • Now the Galaxy M40 will boot into Download Mode.

You can use the Odin tool to flash files on your phone while in download mode. Download mode is also known as Odin mode in some blogs (only in case of Samsung phones). So if you see written Odin mode then it means Download mode.

How to Unlock Bootloader on Galaxy M40

Just like all other phones the Samsung Galaxy M40 also comes with locked bootloader. It means you can not modify the phone using tools & commands. Note: Unlocking bootloader will erase all the data on your phone so take a full backup first. Also the unlock bootloader option will appear after using the new device for fea days (take about 7 days).

Steps to Unlock Bootloader

  1. Open Settings on your Galaxy M40.
  2. Go to About Phone > Software Information.
  3. Tap 7 times on Build Number and it will display ‘You are now a developer’.
  4. Go back to Settings > Developer options.
  5. In Developer Options, enable OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging. Galaxy M40 Unlock Bootloader
  6. Now turn off your phone completely.

  8. Release buttons when Samsung logo appears.
  9. It will now show a warning screen with three options including ‘device unlock mode’. You may not see if your device is new so check after a few days.
  10. Long press Volume Up button to unlock bootloader on Galaxy M40.
  11. It will now erase all the data and unlock the bootloader.

That’s it, now setup your phone and go to Developer option and you will see OEM unlocking options as grey. Now you can install TWRP Recovery & custom ROMs and also you can root your phone.
