Last month, OpenAI hosted a big event to unveil its newest flagship large language model, GPT-4o. The company made several announcements at the event, introducing the desktop app for Mac, a new version of voice mode, and more. Over the last month, OpenAI has gradually rolled out its Mac app to premium plus membership users.

Earlier this month, OpenAI announced its partnership with Apple, with the AI features teased by Apple at its annual developers summit, WWDC 24. However, none of the new Apple Intelligence features are available on eligible devices yet.

Today, OpenAI confirms, “The ChatGPT desktop app for macOS is now available for all users.” You can now easily install the app on your Mac, but ensure that your system is running on macOS Sonoma and Apple Silicon (M1 or later).

You can install the new ChatGPT desktop app on your Mac through this link, as it is not yet available for download on the App Store. Once installed, you can launch the app from Finder or use an easy keyboard shortcut (Option + Space).

You can easily interact with OpenAI’s newest chatbot. When launched, the interface overlays on top of the screen, so you can instantly ask questions related to the content displayed. Additionally, you can drop files, screenshots, photos, and more to ask questions.

The desktop app also lets you ask queries using Voice Mode, however, the company’s more powerful Voice Mode feature isn’t yet available, it will be available in the future.

You can now have voice conversations with ChatGPT directly from your computer, starting with Voice Mode that has been available in ChatGPT at launch, with GPT-4o’s new audio and video capabilities coming in the future. Whether you want to brainstorm a new idea for your company, prepare for an interview or have a topic you’d like to discuss, tap the headphone icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop app to start a voice conversation.
