Apple seeds iOS 14.8.1 for eligible iPhones

Apple surprisingly released iOS 14.8.1 for those who haven’t updated their iPhone to iOS 15 and are still running the iOS 14 version. There are always some important security updates in these updates or surprise updates from Apple. Last week we also received the second iOS 15.1 RC2 for an iPad. iOS 14.8 was released a month ago with a security update and the same we get with the new iOS 14.8.1 update.

There are many users who prefer to stick back to the old iOS for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is jailbreak support. Jailbreaking is possible on many iPhones running iOS 14 and soon other effective methods will emerge for new iPhones running iOS 14. Whereas the iOS 15 is a new update, so it may take time to see jailbreak compatibility.

iOS 14.8.1

Apple only rolled out the iOS 14.8.1 update. It is available for eligible iPhones. iOS 14.8.1 comes with build number 18H107. The update size can vary as per iPhone models. Talking about the changes, the update only contains important security updates.

If you haven’t updated your iPhone to iOS 15 and are still on one of the iOS 14 builds then you will receive the iOS 14.8.1 update on your iPhone. Although Apple has released iOS 14.8.1, the IPSW file is not made available. This means that if you want to downgrade to iOS 14.8.1, it is not possible until IPSW is available.

To manually check for the update go to Settings > Software Update. And once the update pops up click on the download & install button. If you are waiting for a perfect Jailbreak method then you should avoid any update even the minor incremental update for your iPhone.

If you want to go back to iOS 14.8.1 from iOS 15 wait for the IPSW. And if it’s not available, then you won’t be able to downgrade.

You can also install the updates manually with iTunes or Finder. You can use IPSW files if you are planning to install the update using your computer.
